Auto to Manual Conversion Parts List
My son has an 87 Auto 944. We have access to an 87 manual donor car. We plan to swap his car to manual as the flex plate has went bad so now is the time. Just trying to make sure I have a handle on the parts list.
Looking for input. Please NO comments to the tune of it is not worth it!
Bell Housing
Pressure Plate
Fly Wheel
Clutch
Throughout Bearing
Clutch Fork
Slave Cylinder
Master Cylinder
Shifter
Shift Rod
Torque Tube
Coupler
Transmission
CV Axles
Pedal Assembly
Gauge Cluster
What else ????

Shawn, you may be aware of this already, but the automatic 944's unique design makes it suitable for an inexpensive fix when the flex-coupler plate thing fails...
You can unbolt the rubber disc, and the automatic flywheel, and bolt up a standard 944 manual flywheel/clutch disc/pressure plate and re-install the driveshaft. The clutch assembly will just remain permanently engaged so even a used disc can be utilized...you may notice a tiny bit more "harshness" with the shifts but not a lot.
Just an option !
That said, I am 99% sure the bell housing and torque tube are the same from auto to manual 944. I think the only difference on the auto 944 torque tube vs manual is the lack of threaded holes for the manual shift lever to bolt to.

I'm going to show my ignorance as it applies to the auto 944s but does the auto 944 have the hole in the firewall already for the clutch master cylinder? Not to sharpshoot, have you looked at the PET to see what parts are common to both transmission options to narrow down what the differences are?

Another obstacle is the shifter hole. On an automatic it is square and the auto shifter handle bolts to it and needs to be cut for the manual shifting throw. The manual cars have an oval hole and have a rubber boot around the base of the shifter from keeping exhaust gases from entering the car. You may want to just do the clutch swap deal.

You also need:
- the shifter trim (switch panel)
- clutch hydraulic hose (hard line + rubber hose)
- you might need a new brake fluid reservoir as I don't know if the nipple is there on the side of it
- cruise control switch for the clutch pedal (and some wires spliced into the brake pedal switch)
- I've heard that the motor mounts are different for autos, stiffer/taller or something
- the bellhousing is the same casting IIRC, but for the auto, the slave cylinder holes aren't drilled, so just get the manual bellhousing.
