Default 931 Excessive rear wheel end play

Car: 1980 931, 55,000 orig miles, but heavy track use. PROBLEM: Excessive end play right rear wheel. Had my mechanic change wheel bearings and check bearing housing (which looks ok) but still has same excessive end play. Anyone have experience with this? Any ideas on what might be causing the excessive end play (bearing ruled out)? Thank You

If the bearing is good, it's either the control arm (part that goes on the outside of the bearing) or the stub axle (the part that goes inside the bearing).

Whichever it is, once it's properly diagnosed, it should be a simple replacement.

Also, check to see if the big circlip is missing, and if the spacer tube between bearings might be toast.

Thank you very much both Van and Grenadiers. Good information which I'll pass along to my mechanic. Used to do all my own work on that car but getting older and lazier.

Btw, Grenadiers, on your 924 Turbo (931) have you checked the front cross member for looseness? The turbo oil plumbing is situated just above the right side cross member attachment studs and oil can eventually loosen the stud nuts causing movement that eventually enlarges the holes in the cross member. If you ever have this condition contact me for a relatively simple repair article I wrote published in PNWR/PCA Panorama. I believe it's also still available online.
