Default Options to replace disintegrating 'anti-rattle' foam in dash?

I've been working in the dash of my 84 NA over the past few weeks and keep running across horribly degraded foam that used to serve to block rattles and creaks from inside the dashboard, but now just serves to make things a mess whenever it's touched.

What's everyone else using for a replacement for this foam? Where I've removed the crumbling mess, I now have new rattles, so ignoring it isn't really a great solution...

Which foam are you referring to? Doug's link pertains to restoring the foam that actually makes the middle part of the dash (cross sectional). Pics?

Check the weather stripping section of Home Depot, Lowes or an R/V shop. Should be something there that's peel and stick. Doesn't have to be exactly the same.

Yeah, I was talking about the brown stuff that they wrapped around various wires and such *inside* the dash, and around the door handles on the inside of the door cards, etc.

Weatherstripping seemed like a decent option, but I'm a little concerned about whether that'd be a fire risk considering where it's located. I'll do some poking around since there's not a consensus.

As for Doug's link, I do intend to do a dash restore like that at some point too, it's just farther down the list right now...

Thanks guys!

pdxfj's idea looks good. You can get adhesive backed foam tape cheaply. For the wiring, just use this stuff if you want to bundle it:

http://www.autozone.com/starting-cha...uit/64478_0_0/

it's available at almost all auto parts stores and it's easy to install and uninstall as needed.

Perfect- the cloth tape wrap on most of the wiring in my car just falls off the moment you touch it, so that should be a good improvement over what I have now...

I don't think any of the peel and stick foam would be anymore or less flammable than what is in the car now.

Here is something that might work..

If you want a soft foam, they do make it for aircraft applications..check out Wicks aircraft supply or Aircraft Spruce for catalogs. It is fire retardant/resistant and FAA certified..Perhaps they have hard foam too. some foams, (Interstate plastics) are certified for marine use and they are hard foams for redoing deck underlayment, etc. just my 2 cents worth

If your're looking for cloth tape go for hockey tape. Tough as hell, sticky, and cheap.

+1 on hockey tape, re-wrapped almost all my dash harness with it. much more pliable now

also, for foam...
go to lowes/home depot, to the ac/ducting section. you will find a blue cardboard box by frost-king about 10"x 10"x2" or so, inside it has a big roll of black, adhesive, 2"wide 1/8" thick neoprene-type foam used as insulation/rattle stop on ducting.

I would suggest the bubble wrap with the small bubbles. Put a tie-wrap around the bundle.
