Need Reliable 944 mechanic in northern michigan
Hi, i have been a member of the forums for a little while now but never had anything to post. Now i have a bunch. I have taken my 944 to a mechanic in big rapids for a timing belt replace that i thought went fine last year and this year took it to them for a clutch. After getting the timing belt done last year ....bout a day later started to get a strong vibration in the gearshift around 3200 rpm. I naturally assumed with 110k on it it was the rubber clutch needing to be replaced. So i take it to them last week and the mechanic call me telling me there is nothing wrong with the car at all and it runs just fine. I explained to him it is not, he says it is normal. I am starting to think he got the belt on 180 degrees off. Anyway please help need a good mechanic

Drifting
You will be the best mechanic.
If the vibration started after a belt replacement, the correct timing would be suspect.
"It is fine" or quoting an astronomical price implies that the mechanic does not want to do the job or tie up a bay that long.

Yes, what the previous member said is true; YOU will provide the only truly reliable care for your car. There may be a painful learning curve in the process, but you will be ahead in the long run.

Pull the upper timing cover (five bolts) turn the engine over til top dead center and check the lower and upper balance pulleys for proper alignment. You can't fix it from this position but you can at least rule it out.

I'm in northern michigan and am known to wrench a bit, and I have a lot of tools you could maybe use and maybe I could help somehow..
Where about are you? What exactly is the car?

Like what do you mean a belt 180 off? Like a balance shaft 180 out?
Is the vibration in neutral? Clutch in? Out? In all gears? Specific gears? At a specific speed? Need more details..

Still in Big Rapids
The car is still in Big Rapids, I live in Cadillac. The Mechanic that normally does the work had a baby so i am going to let him look at it before i pick it back up.
It is a 1988 944 n/a, the vibration is felt only in the drive line, (gearshifter) it starts to get bad at about 3200rpms and i have really never taken it past that worried it would break something. it does not vibrate with the clutch in. And yes i meant the balance shaft Sorry the first post seemed so cryptic i was/am a little stressed, i really love driving this car and when its down I'm bummed.

Then it's not the engine, must be clutch or rearward..
If you mean sitting in neutral then that eliminates everything past the input shaft also..
Sounds like you're on the right track with the rubber clutch center or TT bearings..

Thank You
Thanks again for all the replies. It was the clutch as i suspected...i just had to be patient for my normal mechanic to be ready. It is all done now with a stage two clutch and purring like a beastly kitten
