Default Coolant reservoir metal insert rusted out

Just curious if anyone has had an issue with the reservoir metal insert rusting out. I'm swapping tanks and the one I'm going to use is much better condition than original, but it has been sitting for some time and this insert has me torn on using the jug at all...

If I remove this piece, will there be an issue with the hose staying attached?
Is anyone running a tank without it? Possible to replace it?

Thanks!

im pretty sure theyre zinc'd from factory to be rust resistant, dunno what happened on yours.
i believe its sort of formed into the plastic as a support for a hose clamp to tighten against. dont think you can just remove the collar.

i'd just run a drill bit down that hole and finish with scraper/whatever and clean out as much as i could before running it.

Use drill wire brush to completely clean it, clean dust/debris and dip the piece to a good quality heat resistant steel paint, take it out and wipe clean exterior, let the interior dry. Should be good for another X years.

I was thinking it should have been made out of copper or something other than steel. The jug had original coolant in it so I'm not sure how this happened either.

By now the jug is hard as a rock from age, I think I'm going to try and remove it. If that doesn't work, I might try a electrolysis method to get to bare metal.

Electrolysis will be hard on such small piece, dip it in to vinegar and let it work for day or two.

I like this stuff:

http://www.homedepot.com/p/Krud-Kutt...32-6/203396826

What works for me is to pour some into a plastic cup and whenever I have a rusty fastener or something, in it goes. Pull it out in 20 mins with needle nose pliers or a magnetic screw driver and it's virgin. For deep rust I'd let it soak overnight. I've had the same cup of it sitting in the garage for over a month now, it goes a long way before you need to chuck it and refill the cup.

Vinegar works well too as Voith mentioned.
