Default 92 Porsche 968 Hall sensor

Hi I am new to owning a Porsche and within in the first week of owning my 968 the check engine light came up and it says its the hall sensor. Now I just wanted to make sure this part http://www.pelicanparts.com/cgi-bin/...606-170-02-M14 (Pick Up Coil (Cam Position Sensor)) is the right part to fix it. Thanks guys sorry if this is an obvious answer I literally have no clue.

yep. see if your plug is melba toast first.

you will need an allen with a swivel ball head to swap it.

some ppl replace just the optical pick up if you want to go that route.

This is exactly the same part as I'm trying to replace on my 928. I hope for your sake it is easy to access on the 968. Common failure seems to be the plugs as they get brittle and crack apart. You can buy the plugs.

On the 928 if the sensor breaks it retards the timing. If it's the same on the 968 you could be looking at a decent power boost by fixing it

Easy to change with the right tool on a 68. 6 degrees retarded without the signal....it is a huge difference.

The hold it to the floor reset does not work with my particular ecu/dme. Disconnect the battery while you are working on it.

I've dealt with this issue on a few 968s. It has always been just the connector, not the sensor itself. I cut the connector off, and solder on another one, which I source from a 90s VW at the junkyard. I don't remember which model, or which particular sensor for that matter, but probably the Golf and Jetta, and probably for the crank position sensor, has the same 3-pin plug as the 968 hall sensor.

I'm sure a lot of other VW/Audi cars have this plug somewhere in them... just gotta go look around.

Let me know if you need help getting one.

Hey everyone one thanks for all the help i decided to just buy the full sensor from Pelican parts. It may not be the cheapest but its just incase the whole thing is broken. Thanks again though. Also do any of you know where the power steering fluid reservoir is? Mine power steering line is leaking and i bought the part to fix it i just need to know where to top it up so that I don't ruin the whole system before part gets here.

It's the one right next to the hall sensor...

Default Will the bad connector cause a stumble.....

...accelerating at lower rpm?
I've got the stumble and while checking the distributor cap, I nudged the hall sensor connector and it pretty much fell apart....wasn't even connected!

Thanks,

Scott

IIRC a bad/faulty Hall sensor sends the 968 DME into a "limp mode" with very low ignition timing.

My 968 has a low rpm stumble which gets worse with more throttle. Let me know if you figure it out. My hall sensor looks fine...
