Beautiful 931... Possible purchase tomorrow
#16
I just want to start out by thanking everyone who answered my post, whether you think its a good deal or not. I am just looking for a project that will give me something to tinker with and possibly sell in a few years if it comes to that. From what I've been seeing, you either like these cars or don't. whether Bias comes into or not, everyone has their reasoning.
I personally love the bodystyle, interior (even if its beat up) and the small powerplant + turbo. I think it will be a good little project and that I will be happy with the purchase, I don't need anything "super fast", just something that is decently fast and can handle. If I needed something relatively fast I would just buy another LT1 C4 Vette.
@HICKS I am actually going to go give him $1500 down until my next check, so yeah I am gonna get it.

Good luck, I'm not super up to date on 931's but the price seems pretty good considering.. I think even if there is alot more problems its likely a good buy except in a worst case scenario. You could likely part out what you know for sure is good right now for close to what your paying.
Only way I could see thinking if this was a bad idea was if I was having a really bad day and felt like taking it out on you... *cough*...

Congrats on the purchase, go register at 924board.org
DONT turn the motor until you swap the timing belt, its really THAT important.
After that, do a bit of reading on the 931, remember its not intercooled and if you want to mash the throttle you HAVE to install an intercooler on it.
Other than that...enjoy !

Thanks for the responses everyone!
@Morghen - Thanks! I'm really excited to get it dropped off when he gets a minute. Yeah, Ill make sure I put in a new timing belt, not my first interference engine so I know the risk of not.
I am going to make an account at 924board.org tonight as soon as I get out of work! Until then, would you have a site that you would recommend looking at intercoolers? I wanna daydream and little bit and look at some possible purchases.

Well thats an 80 with the G31 tranny.... more fun, than a 944, ad a FMIC and a boostcontroller and you are easily in 951 range with less weight. and you can easily lose 200lbs out of it.
And it might be an S with LSD tranny so for 1800.... not bad.
there really aren't many "unavailble parts" and swaping to EFI, takes care of most of that. With a motor that it a bit more robust than the 944 block.
944: "ah crap i gotta fix something again...."
931: "I'm going to tinker with it abit"/ "YAY it starts!"

In regards to whether this is an "S" or has the "M-471 package", it has the 3 spoke wheels, electric windows and rear discs if that matters?
It's really tough, even searching on 924board to find out what I have. Even telling me just to run the VIN or where to look for signs would be a huge help!

You have to learn how to search the 924board :P its weird at the begining but it works once you get the hang of it Just search intercooler install and check the box "search for all items"
Take a look at other projects and make up your mind about the intercooler.
The cleanest way is to take off the nose panel and install a 944 turbo intercooler with some 944 turbo metal that holds the IC. But you can do the IC install in many ways.
First tho, you should check and make sure everything is fine with the engine, turbo and gearbox.
Regardless of its problems, you can find answers and leads for where to order replacement parts on 924board.

I have next-to-no 924/931 experience, but doesn't the presence of the 5-bolt wheels indicate an "S"? I looked at a 931 locally here recently that the owner claimed was an "S" with 4 bolt rims. Not nearly as decent as this example, but was only asking $800 for it.

The non turbo 924 is a non-interference so if the belt breaks no damage. The 924 Turbo (931) however IS interference so timing belt is a necessary maintenance item.
Determining if it is an S - Being 5 bolt is not an indication alone. AFAIK the all the later 931s went to 5 bolt early 944 suspension. I had an 931 parts car I am almost certain was an S. Ideola or someone would know better than I, but to likely be an S model it will be 5 bolt with "sewer lids" wheels, M471, sport seats, sway bars F/R, and hopefully an LSD G31 dogbox. But as Porsche usually does, the next years model usually includes all the previous years "S model" upgrades.
Seems like a nice car. Ideola's Garage is a great site for parts for your new 931. Good luck with it, looks like its in awesome shape. I hear they can be great cars if you can sort all the costly CIS issues.

Dan (ideola) is in the middle or past the middle of a big move and thats why he is |on vacation|
If you google for Magnus Walkers 924 turbo you will notice its an 1980 4lug car.
The 924 turbo came in two types: the S1(built until 1980) and the S2(1981 onwards)
Some S1 cars had 4lug wheels, i think only in the US(together with the detuned engine, 170hp and 177hp for the rest of the world). Below a picture of my Germany delivered S1, 5 lug as you can see.
The 924 turbo S2(built 1981 onwards) always came with 5 lug, even in US.
As far as i know there is no factory designation for a 924 turbo S, its just the original 924 turbo (S1) and the facelift S2. And to be honest the S1 and S2 designations are just internal labels, Porsche sold the 924 turbo as 924 turbo and didnt make a name difference in public.
Options like 5 lug brakes(standard for the facelift), power equipment, LSD and AC were customizable on all cars, even the 924 NA

I believe it has to have LSD to be an "S".. Right on the top of the middle rib on the bottom of the trans directly under where the CV shafts come out but all the way at the bottom is where the trans model number is, having LSD it ends /12
I like to search 924board.org like this..
Enter into google search box..

replacing "SEARCHTERMS" with whatever your trying to find
C ya there

BTW my 80 931S is the only Porsche I've ever had so I can't compare really but I can tell you that I absolutely love it to pieces (and back again regularly)..
I can't really compare it to porsches but for a car its quite badass indeed...
