Default 968 rattling gearbox in AZ

Hi guys, I moved out to Scottsdale, and I'm wondering if anyone has any experience with a local shop that I can take the 968 to for a rattling in the gearbox? The noise sounds like rattling steel coming from the gearbox area. Shifts fine, and the noise doesn't change when the clutch is engaged or not.
I also have some whine coming from the transmission, but with less than 30k miles on it, Im hoping its not the pinion gear.

Are you sure it's the trans and not a heat shield by the exhaust or a loose/broken exhaust hanger?

Sometimes the shifter **** rattles on the shaft if the rubber isolator falls loose. Hold your hand against the **** and apply pressure laterally to see if the sound goes away. If not, then I'd inspect the CV joints for one coming loose or failed outright. Also, possibly the coupling between the drive shaft and the transaxle input shaft coming loose.

Its not a heat shield, it feels like multiple pieces of solid steel rattling together, or a coupling of some sorthat t is loose. I will inspect underneath the best I can without ramps. I notice it most when in nuetral, and reverse, or just going slow like pulling in or out of the driveway, intersections, etc., Could also feel like a clutch plate or disc loose but no issues with shifting at all.

You mentioned the noise persists when the clutch is depressed. Is this at rest or in motion, and does it make a difference?

Hi Kevin,
It seems to do it when not in gear (in neutral) or with the clutch depressed if in gear while driving.

If you have the ability, it would be a good time to change the trans fluid if it hasn't been done recently. If anything is worn or broken in the trans you would see metal dust or even flakes in the fluid. Upgrading to thicker fluid seems to help too.

Have you drained the fluid to look for flakes? My comment about the heat shield or hangers comes from when my muffler hanger was sheared, if I didn't know it was that I would have sworn it was trans noise because it was loudest at idle. A minute or two under the car can eliminate it, at least. Grab stuff and yank it around.

I'd start by looking for loose items such as the exhaust (could it be hitting something?), heat shields, rear shocks (check bolts), sway bar, brake pads (try lightly touching the brake pedal to see if that stops the noise). Move on to tear down, clean, inspect the CV joints, make sure they don't have severe wear, are properly lubricated, and bolts all tight.

Failing those items as the source, have someone go through the transmission. Transmissions aren't often described as "rattling," but don't want to get hung up on words here. Twenty years later, I am starting to see a lot of 968 transmissions come in for service, many with disastrously worn bearings. The service parts are still available although getting them from Porsche or VW/Audi is a trick. The upgraded, moly coated synchro rings that supersede the original bronze-only rings make a nice difference in shifting.

I see transmission service in my near futre, but hopefully, it will not be too severe. The more I sit in the car at idle and go through the gears, when I depress the clutch in and out several times I can hear the plates clank together a bit, which is a similar sound as the metal "rattling" sound.

It drives fine, I am wondering if there is something like a bad CV joint or something else going on?
When coasting down the driveway, it was clanking but when I acclerate through the gears and reach highway speeds, it seems fine....
