Default turbocharger to engine mounting bolt removal

I'm down to ONE bolt that I've spent the entire day trying to remove and it's keeping me from removing the turbo. It's the 13mm (M8) bolt that mounts the turbo and the down pipe to the engine block. I've used every socket set, both 1/4 and 3/8 drive, combination wrenches and even bought a 1/2" offset box end wrench that I was sure was the answer. I can't get any of them to hook up with the bolt.

Have any of you Turbo guys out there found the secret to getting this thing out? I don't care if I have to buy another tool as long as I know which one solves the problem.

Can you share a photo from above? I don't recall have any issues with any bolt when i did mine, save for stripping one of the hex heads below the turbo.

I assume you're talking about the bolt connecting the downpipe to the block.

If it's the one that goes through the heatshield and the black support for the intake, that one is horrible. I believe I got mine started by grinding down a 1/4" drive socket (13 mm) and using a 1/4" wobble extension. The wobble is needed because a straight extension will hit the downpipe. As the bolt starts to come out, the angle and clearance gets too much for the wobble extension after a few millimeters, so I had to switch to open end wrenches and undid it a fraction of a turn at a time (this was painstaking to say the least). I am thinking I may extend the hole in the black bracket to a slot when it goes back in. I'll see if I have any pictures or notes on it...

Might be easier with the dipstick tube removed also.

Edit: took a couple of pictures to help explain:

13mm 1/4" drive socket, ground down so it's only around 5-6mm deep.

modified socket on a 1/4" drive wobble extension, will JUST about get the angle to start loosening the bolt

Location of this bolt

That's the bolt. One of the posters on PP showed me a Sears short 13mm socket with a universal built in that appears to be just the ticket. I ran right over and bought one and will try it 1st thing tomorrow AM.

Thanks for the heads-up, I may try and pick one of those up when it's time to reinstall

Finally got the turbo out. Using the 13mm universal short socket made it a snap.

I couldn't figure out how to show the picture since it's a "net" link. So I've attached the actual link with all the info: http://www.sears.com/craftsman-13mm-...p-00943204000P
