Default STAHL HEADERS

Feel good moment. I have dreamt about one day getting a set of these STAHL headers. Stahl is no longer in biz. The Bursch headers ran a very close second and I really like their cat delete pipe. Heck, Bursch might be as good or even better performers... but the research I did shows these are a 5-8 hp bonus on the 8 valve engine (dyno'd) & I couldn't find dyno research on the Bursch. I forked out the extra coin because there isn't much more I can do to improve the engine without huge bucks, so to me it is money well spent.

Here's the cheap adapter pipe I'll be welding to my "test pipe".

HUGE THANKS to Wayne & Ernie from MANTIS RACING for the incredible service. I will be dealing with you again in the future...

You are aware that you have to slip the exaust onto the header flange and not clamp it on right, otherwise it could lead to cracks ...
Phone Karl at Racer's edge,he'll give you the details on how to set up your exaust system and which muffler to use in order to get the best results.
I used a "stepped" megaclamp to secure my exaust to the header flange.

Yes,Ernie is a valuable resource to the 944 community !

Cheers

I recently bought a Bursch header as well but mine looks different at the collector than that one.
Looking forward to trying it, but need an excuse to tear my current exhaust off first (aka lots of time before next smog check )

Today I'm doing it. GETTING EXCITED.

The OG primaries are 1 5/8" vs. 1 3/4". I checked the exhaust port for fitment with the gasket & no grinding required. Also I was able to slip the header up from the bottom. everything lined up just like a dream (so far). My ONLY complaint, and yeah for the price, it hurts not to have a real ceramic finish instead of the cheap spray coating which is on it.

OMG!! I just finished putting it together & revved it up to 4000 rpm in the garage. WOW. Exotic sound! Can't wait to give it the real test.

It is not a cheap spray coating ... my Stahl header survived two oil fires and it still looks good after I brushed off the fire extinguishing agent ( Spa Sense 4L Fire Suppression system aimed at the oil filter and the fuel rail )

Just sayin ...

Cheers

Wildcat,
Brother you must have gotten a "proper" coating.
Mine is starting to flake after the drive to work & back today.

Initial impressions is the exhaust system sounds really good. I feel a bit of a difference but not huge. Is there less torque? Maybe. Is there more HP? Probably.

On the hill climb to work today I'd say there was less pull in 5th but more performance in the upper rpms in lower gears, but will have to keep driving to sort it out.

Nice looking piece. I've got the Stahl header on my 968 engine and it sure is a good piece.

anybody ever try this header or the bursch/msds header on a turbo car with a custom crossover? I imagine you might need to chop the header and fab a custom collector/flange.

I think that is a great idea to convert it for turbo'd cars!

So, not to rag on about the finish. I bought it for function. ANd driving to work and back over the last 3 days has convinced me I LOVE it.

BTW: like I say the fitment of EVERYTHING is 100%. No grinding required. Here is the exhaust port with factory gasket for the 2.5.

After a night ride in a eerily quite part of the mountains, ripping **** up with my racing buddy (high revs) for 3 hours & todays fun ride... I'm convinced this exhaust mod has improved the fuel economy of the vehicle!

Both my co-drivers (one with a 650 hp racer & the other with an LT1 Camaro) commented on how well the car pulls, so the car still must have torque. Even for a N/A 4 popper.

Also, the exhaust note is so much better. Before I'd use ear plugs frequently. Not anymore!

In conclusion... AWESOME.
