Default 924 Clutch change tips? - Replacing this weekend!

Hello all,

I have ordered a new clutch for my 1980 924 2.0 N/a 5 speed due to mine being on its last legs.

I have been looking at how the clutch is changed on these as I have never changed the clutch on a car with a rear mounted transaxle and I have a few questions.

1) Do I separate the "torque tube" from the transaxle as well as the clutch bell housing? And then fully remove the transaxle? Or do I just unbolt the mounts and drive shafts to the transaxle, and pull it back whilst connected to the torque tube after removing the 4 clutch bell housing bolts?

2) Does the starter motor need to come off?

3) What precautions do I need to take regarding the crank position sensor? (If that is the correct name)

4) In comparison to a normal RWD setup, is it really any more difficult to change the clutch? As I have done one on a Volvo 940 turbo before!

Thanks in advance!

Michael.

Go to Clark's Garage's website,it will give you all the detailed steps required to do it properly !
I replaced mine over the Summer and it was well described ...

I do believe you need to drop the transaxle on the 924, you do on the 944. After that you pull the 4 bolts at the Bellhousing for the TT and pull it back. This should be enough room to get the BH off, you will pull the starter as well.

I haven't done this job yet, but it is one of the more involved ones on this platform, budget a extra time since its your first and consider having a 2 new TT to transaxle coupler bolts on hand as they like to get stripped out some.

You'll need to remove the shift linkage bolt which should be lockwired as well as the two input shaft allen bolts ... best it to read up on the procedure first,it will save you a lot of grief
The bell housing is a real pain to remove and reinstall,be patient !

I just did my 944 and it wasn't fun but doable.

The only way I could get the bellshousing off the engine was to gently jack up the front of the engine to tilt it back on it's mounts. That gave it mor tunnel clearance to come off.
