Late 944 Windshield
It looks like in my area it costs about $850 to replace a late windshield. As always, it's more in Canada, compared to the 500-600 I've read about in the US.
I want to install a used one from a wrecker, but it looks like you can't remove it without destroying the build in frame that goes on the upper, left and right edges.
Am I correct in thinking this is the fame in question?

Sure looks like you can buy it separately....... Most are of the opinion that this type of work should be left to the "professionals", but late 944 windshield expertise is probably like hen's teeth, what with all the glass glass guy f-ups I've reads about. Well, at least it's on their dime.
Hopefully someone can chime in with some constructive advice. Being the only bread winner in the family, having a small baby, and the fact that I was laid off for half of last year, makes stacks of cash for the 944 quite scarce.

I bought a replacement factory OEM windshield from a Porsche dealer for my 91 S2cab. The cab has a unique windshield because of the lower angle of the frame. Talk about rare... Safelite could get a used one shipped in, only one in the country but luckily Porsche had a new one for about the same price $500. Safelite wanted $250 to install (up from $125 labor they quoted me 6 months earlier). They think they are now the big dogs. I went with AAA glass for $99 and they did fine. I don't see where you can't do it yourself. You need a new seal for it.

The frame that you are talking about is used to attach the OEM windshield surround seal. If you are not concerned about originality, you can purchase an aftermarket seal that attaches to the edge of the glass without using the stock frame. You should be able to purchase the aftermarket seal from a good glass shop. I have an aftermarket seal on my 1991 S2 and it looks very similar to the OEM. With a universal seal, you should be able to find and install a used windshield for significantly less than $850.
If the person who removes the glass is careful, the used windshield can be removed without ruining the existing frame if you want to go the original route. I have done it successfully with my son's 1985.5 944.

Ah yes, the rubber molding that surrounds the windshield does engage into the built in plastic frame of the windshield glass. But, it also properly spaces out the windshield.
I'm still unclear on of the part I linked to is the plastic frame, or not. Looks more like a pinch weld bulb seal.
I'll attempt to salvage my original frame when removing my cracked glass. I successfully removed the glass from the wrecker, but the plastic frame crumbled, and was all ready disbanded. It was not an original windshield, but did gave the built in antenna.
