Default Replacing Oil Pump... advice?

I need to replace the oil pump in my '91 944S3. I've done just about everything else to a 944 ... but never the oil pump. Is it necessary to remove the oil pan and replace its gasket to properly fit the new oil pump?

Why are you replacing the oil pump?

The oil pan needs to be removed. You could get away with lowering it an inch or two at the front to clear the oil pump, but why not go all the way and benefit from a new pan gasket.

Don't forget the orange Loctite 574!

I'm replacing the oil pump because the existing one has 230,000+ miles on it and it leaks all over the place.

Permatex anaerobic gasket maker is a cheaper alternative to the loctite 574. Compare the technical data sheets.

On Closer inspection of image number 3, it looks like I need to replace the balance shaft seals as well. What do you think?

that looks like a full front seal job, a lot easier than swapping out the pump.
don't bother even at that mileage unless you already have a new pump in hand...

My 968 has 250k miles on it, and the front of the engine is bone dry thanks to periodic replacement of front seals.

Under normal circumstances, the oil pump should never leak. If someone removed it and put it back on without sealant, then obviously it would leak.

I would say, unless someone has messed with the pump before, just leave the pump alone and replace all your front seals & o-rings. Clean the area so you can check for leaks later.

Removing and resealing the oil pump is a big job. They do leak sometimes leak, but I would not go there unless you are sure it is the pump to block sealant. Clean it up and do all the front seals and belts first.

I agree with the rest of the posts here. Chances of the leaking coming from the oil pump are low. Are you having oil pressure problems or priming problems. If not the pump is probably not the source of your leaks. If the seal between the pump and the block is leaking generally you will have oil pressure problems because air gets in the system.

I had to change my pump for this reason and tried to do it without removing the oil pan and its impossible especially since the seal between the punp and the block which is created with the loctite is crucial and everything has to be very clean to make it happen.

Regards
Mark

Well, when the engine is at running temp, the oil pressure at idle is around 2, at speed, around 4. Does that sound like a good oil pump?

That may be indicative of rod and main bearing wear rather than pump wear.

That sounds normal when the oil is fully hot and if you were using thinner 10w-30 oil.

Well, I'm running Mobil1 15 w50 as always. Do I need to replace the rod bearings? I was thinking I might as well if I'm removing to oil pan to replace the oil pump.

I would, bearings are cheap, That said, i'm with everyone else on this one, reseal the front of the motor and see if its leaking at the pump. If it is, it would be an unusual failure.

Do the rod bearings no matter what, you really are due for them and that will help your oil pressure numbers.
