Default Electric power steering?

Has anybody every replaced the power steering on a 944 with a modern electric setup?

It's not something I'm seriously thinking of doing, but I can't help wondering if in principal it could be a good idea. I'm happy enough with the way the power steering performs on my car, but in 12 years I don't think there's ever been a time when it wasn't leaking at least a bit, and it's a bit of a power drain...

Might I suggest manual steering instead... much simpler, no fluid mess.

Yup, I think if I was going to change anything I'd install a manual rack.

I've just been doing a couple of things like oil cooler seals, and it's just a bit depressing that as always there's power steering fluid everywhere, I can see that the anti-roll bar bushes I replaced two years ago are already almost shot...

Maybe I'll rebuilld the PS pump again, and perhaps have a go at replacing the rack seals

Main problems with a manual rack is they are hard to find and if you do come across one it's likely well past its prime. Don't forget they are all 30+ years old now. Another problem is the intermediate steering shafts are nla and a used one will probably be too worn by now.

You can always depower your current power rack, I've heard people having success doing it that way.

I'm not so sure about de-powering the existing rack... the couple of times that my power assistance has failed the steering was pretty heavy at low speed. If I didn't have to parallel park all the time I wouldn't mind, but being an urbanite that would get pretty aggravating. Or I'll end up looking like Popeye ;-)
