Not if its the new style two part crossover pipe. I've done it, but you have to get the alignment just right to get it off, keep trying.

I had a similar issue putting the cover on. A tab which held the heat insulation in place was the culprit. Till the engine back/down as much as possible. With a pry bar or long strong screw driver it should come off. A little WD40 might help.

Calling the OP: Did you resolve this problem, and how?

I'm in the same situation with an '89 S2 and I don't want to start beating on it unless I really have to. the car is on a lift with a jack supporting the engine at the oil pan and another jack under the TT, AFAIK the housing should just come out. TT/drive train disengaged, all known bolts removed including the fork retainer, starter's out, sensor unplugged, grounds disconnected, slave cylinder removed.

Is it time for the rubber mallet? How much does this thing weigh? I'm working by myself and don't want to lose any toes.
