944 Hatch Repair - Chicago
We're experiencing the typical hatch de-lamination issue on my son's '86 951. I was hoping someone might be able to recommend a glass repair shop in the Chicago area that has some experience fixing 944 hatches. I want to make sure whoever fixes it understands some of the nuances of this repair, e.g., reshaping the frame first, not reattaching the struts until the sealant is fully cured, etc.
Thanks.

Hatch/Glass repair in Chicago
Hey Roger or anyone else !!!
I am looking for the same thing, for the same reasons.
Does anyone know of a repair shop (or individual willing to do the work) in the Chicagoland area who has done a great job repairing delaminating hatch glass ????

Good luck. I never got any suggestions. On the upside, it hasn't really gotten any worse. But I'm pretty sure the deformation of the window frame has made it a bit difficult to keep shut (requires a bit of fiddling) and it rattles.

Call around to some of the smaller auto glass shops. If you find someone who has been in the industry for a while they will be familiar with the 944's back glass. I talked with an older guy who was very familiar with them and suggested a couple of different places to try.

Not in Chicago but I had the same issue and ended up calling around to 4 or 5 shops before I found one that said "bring it in and we'll take a look". I actually took the hatch off the car and removed all the trim and weather stripping and just took the frame and glass in. They took a look at it, understood the issue right way, made no promises and ended up making a phenomenal repair. Removed the glass, straightened the frame, cleaned everything up, primed the glass (which is key to the new bonding agent not failing again) and rebedded the thing. Cost me $160.

found hatch repair in Chicagoland
I have had my hatch repaired by:
Joe at Auto Glass Plus, 1929 S. Arlington Heights Rd., Arlington Heights, IL 60005.
847-483-5237
From my perspective they did a great job at a very fair price.
Joe has ~30+ years experience and is familiar with this issue of the lack of adhesion of the glass and frame and the frame distorting.
I am thrilled he was able to do it.
