help with parts needed for 968 turbo from 951
hello,
first off ive been on the 951 forum for a few years now.
love rennlist...an incredible wealth of knowledge and experience at your finger tips!
ive had my 1986 951 for a few years, have put a ton of money into it.
LR 3.0l 968 block 8 valve head motor with almost everything modded.
LR super 75 with 10 hotside extruded and honed
tons of other modded parts(intake manifold, stage 2 intercooler, etc.)
ive always loved the 951, but really want a 968. the 951 has a bit of rust and things are always breaking(150k miles on body).
i would like to take all the parts needed for the 968 turbo job off the 951.
i have done alot of research on here about the conversion, but before i start, i would like to know as much details as possible, all the parts im going to need on the 968.
motor
torque tube
trans
intercooler (have to mod the 968 to fit it)
3" to 4" exhaust (a little bit off work to fit it on the 968, from what i have read)
dme/klr boxes
wiring harness...not sure which wires though, besides main harness
gauge cluster for boost? does that include the wires that connect to the cluster or just the gauges?
i think i read something about the brake booster??
so far i think i have everything...but im sure there are a few things im missing!
thanks for any help and advice....i wont be starting this project until the spring.
in the mean time i will refresh the motor and also i have a stock motor in pieces that i am going to try building beside the 3.0l motor.

sounds like a cool project, most of the things should be pretty straightforward excepting for the body differences up front and the exhaust outlet.
what are you going to do with the 968 engine?

im looking forward to this project for sure!!
i havent found my 968 yet....im located in western canada, but it doesnt matter as long as its in north america. ive already imported 4 vehicles from the usa.
i plan on selling the motor and trans to off set the cost of the project.
im sure im missing a couple more things needed from the 951 and possiblly custom made things too(intercooler pipes).

You don't want to use the 6-speed from the 968? Well keep in mind that one 968 axle is the same as the 951, but one is different (shorter?), and I always forget which one that is. So keep your 951 axles with the gearbox.
Just keep everything from the engine bay. Coolant tank, coolant crossover pipe, all coolant hoses, throttle cable, clutch hydraulics (mainly the slave, hose, and pipe), brake booster heat shield, steering shaft head shield, starter area heat shields, and AC lines!
You'll need to retrofit 951 fuel lines.
Oil cooler - the 968 one is different, but it's bigger, and can be used if you also use the 968 oil filter console and 968 oil lines.

i plan on using the 951 trans and axles and sell the 968 trans.
as for the ac lines if the 968 has ac...will it fit with the motor and turbo...is it in the same location as 951 one?
968 fuel lines are different than 951? or in a different location than 951?
i already have a really nice oil cooler that i will use.
thanks for the info FRporscheman

admiralkhole,
i think im going to go with the 951 parts as much as possible....it sounds like its the easiest route to go.
i will have some specialty parts for sale in the near future though.

absolutely will keep everyone up to date on this project.
actually its two projects.....build my first motor(stock), and the 968 build with my refreshed(another first for me)motor.

The 16v fuel rail is different than on the 8v. So, on the 968, both fuel hoses go to the back of the engine, and I'm a bit hazy but I think they both have threaded fittings. But it's no big deal to cut them off at the hard line in the wheel well and attach one of the replacement fuel line kits they make for the 951s. AFAIK the hard lines coming from the tank are the same on both cars all the way to the wheel well.
The 951 AC lines are different, they are routed a special way to avoid all the 951 parts. I can confirm it this weekend, I should have one of each in my garage.
I was very close to doing this same project back a few years ago, then things came up. Hopefully I'll do it soon (before I'm on welfare).

FRporscheman,
i have two metal braided fuel lines from the 951...sounds like its not too difficult to sort out the fuel lines. i havent decided whether to keep the a/c or not....if its not too difficult i might explore the idea some more.
fugmaglottu,
are you doing a similar project?
