Default Correct Tie Rod End Installation Tool?

I'm installing new tie rod ends, so I picked up this tool at work:

Unfortunately, the stud just spins when I turn the nut, no matter how tight I make the tool. What have you guys used to install new tie rod ends? Am I just using the tool wrong?

Thanks,
Jeff

Installation? You don't need a tool to install them. If they spin when you torque the nut down place a jack under the tie rod to exert some upwards force. You just need a hammer to remove them. Hit the side of the spindle hard and they'll pop out.

Yes, Mike's right. The tool in your picture is to remove them.

Make sure the stud is really in the steering knuckle then use a non-locknut to suck the stud all the way through. Once you do that, remove the regular nut and place a locknut on and torque to the appropriate specs.

The design of tie rod ends uses what's called a sticking taper. Sometimes it takes a little rap with a rubber mallet or other soft member to get the taper seated. (Support the steering knuckle from underneath when you do this so as not to put too much load on the knuckle extension.) After that, the taper should stick and not rotate. If it doesn't stick in this rotational position of the male/female taper, rotate the tie rod end threaded shaft to a slightly different engagement and retry.

I'll give that a shot next time. Thanks!
