Finally, it looks something like this.
Oh, here the braided fuel lines, silicone vacuum hoses and the strut brace are not yet installed.

Sexy!

But a stock throttle cam? Unless that's your preference.

Thanks guys!

Odonell: I've never tried the round one, but I think I actually prefer having more control in the low rpm range instead of the super sharp response. Helps me with fuel efficiency.

Hi!
I paid attention regarding Your build but somehow I lost info regarding vibrations. Have You sorted vibrations? How?

Well, I got a used harmonic balancer from an S2, but it isn't really up to the task (too old I guess). Hence the alternator belt makes an ugly noise because the balancer pulley is probably out of round.

Other than that the engine runs nice and smooth. Around 4000 rpm I get a strong buzz in the driveline (I feel it mostly on the gear lever). But apart from this, it really is running smooth.

I should get the RS Barn balancer but it costs a fortune.

I understand.
So with standard 2,5 8V pulley there where enormous vibrations? I was thinking about S2 crankshaft with 100,50mm M44.09 pistons. Should I be worried about vibrations? (S2 crankshaft with stroker Pauter rods - despite that normal 2,5 8 V parts).
P.S. Also with Tom's DME 😊

I've never ran it with the 2.5l stock pulley. I had some trouble with the alternator tensioner which broke, then got loose, but that eventually had to do with wrong screw size and stripped threads. With some locktite it holds now with no issues.

The problem with S2 crank is the longer stroke which results in more crank flex thus more vibrations. I think nobody recommends running a 3l crank without the harmonic balancer or dual mass flywheel.

Glad to hear you'll be getting that ECU!

Vibration damper was in S2 and in S but 2,7 (M44.11/12) got pulley...
But for S was different one then for S2..

Update time!

The engine has ~22000 km in it. Still no proper tune, but I adjusted it to have ~0.9 lambda at full throttle so it revs happier and safer too! (It was ~1.1!)

I don't remember if I mentioned that the new engine liked to pee itself / spit the coolant. Apparently the expansion tank was borked and the cap could not seat properly thus there was no way for the system to build pressure. I finally got all new stock hoses, radiator and expansion tank at the beginning of the year. No issues ever since!

Even the air con was fixed thanks to another member here! It's running on R134a now and is fine.

There's an oil leak, though, as it turns out the sealing ring of the sandwich plate is dead. That didn't last long at all.

Enough already, it's picture time!

Please excuse the cover and the dirt on the car!

First off Beautiful car....
Doing a stroker build on a NA myself n you got mentioned so I thought I'd reach out.
So did you ever get a proper tune?? Did you ever have the Motor/ Car Dyno'd if so what kind of power did it make? N how is it holding up so far?

Looong overdue update.

The car was mapped at Augment last August!

Yeah, I know I'm a lazy poster... Anyway, got some interesting results.

Well, first of all, I drove about 2500 km before I even got to Tom, then we drove up and around Scotland and returned with 1 issue: lost coolant in Germany. I lost a bolt under the exhaust manifold and then all the coolant got out. On a Friday around 18:00 we got lucky to find a shop within a few kilometers (just limped there with even switching the engine off while rolling) where they fixed me up free of charge. Very lucky on that one!

So at Augment, the people were absolutely fantastic, even got the compulsory tea from Tom's father, had the opportunity to sit in more 944s then I've ever seen in my life before... It was just a blast for me!

The car did very well on the dyno. Tom worked his magic and it got much smoother everywhere, especially on full throttle. Now it pulls like a train till redline! Almost too boring! :P
At the end of the day, it made 180 hp and around 250 Nm on the flywheel. Torque is where I expected it, bit disappointed with the power figure.

The interesting bit is that Tom mapped a 2.5l the day before with the same ECU & cam (both Augment products) and that also made 179 hp. It had about 30 ft lbs less, though, so that is what you get with the 3l crank.
I think the power curve also gets a little too flat at the top, it could be a bit more peaky. What does it depend on? I've got no idea. The only thing I could come up with, is that a 2.85l engine should make more power than a 2.5l given everything else is identical, so my guess is that it cannot get enough air. The 2 things I didn't do compared to Roger with his 205 hp 2.7l are the Lindsey ported head and extrude honed intake manifold. I'd put my money in the porting, with a level 2 one gets +30% flow, maybe that could help getting to 200 hp?

What are your thoughts?

Not enough head flow and/or your intake manifold is too long to tune at high rpm (not related to displacement).

I got to 160+ hp on a stock cam 9.5:1 2.5L and could see it running out of air at the top too from the weak 05R cam.

Ford 4.6L vs 5.4L sohc engines, same heads pistons cams and compression make the same horsepower, with the 5.4 making predictably ~20% more torque.

Spend $ on a upgraded head or go 16v... like I've opted to do.

I bet your car pulls strong and smoothly though.

Good points V2, cheers!

Right, it has practically max torque from 2200 to 5200 rpm and max power from 5400 to 6300.
Hahaha, I keep thinking I made a TDI engine just running on petrol and with a decent redline!

bump, curious if you would be willing to share your timing curve if you have it.

have a 2.9L engine, 11.5ish compression here...all my files are for a 100x78.9 engine, the new one is 103x88.
more stroke makes me think, more timing!
much higher CR and bore diameter say, less timing!

we'll see what happens, lol
