Default How long do water pumps last

Having my belts retensioned on an 87 951 and the guy calls and said the water pump is leaking. I have had to add about a pint of antifreeze twice in the last 1K miles. So I check the records and the leaking pump (a new Lasco) was installed 10 years ago but only 18K miles. The one before that was 5 years and 30K miles. I'm new to 944s but does this sound normal?

10 years seems about right. Water pumps last longer if you use the car every day.

At 282,0000 miles my '88 is still on its 2nd Laso water pump... Not leaking yet, good cooling.
Factory pump lasted 19 years and 140k..
3rd pump (and 6th Timing Belt) expected within next 12 months..

20 years on my rebuilt from Zims. It just seized up yesterday which is why I noticed your post...lol! I have 230K miles and it lasted 200K miles more than the original. I want to buy another one from them but am pretty nervous about their core policy they have posted. It appears that they want a pristine core or you don't get your $100 deposit back. Anyone have a problem with this?

Ive sent Zims a lot of WPs over the years and never had a rejection, I think the failure they describe is fairly extreme.

I have a WP core if needed.

SO far I've done my pump every other belt change.

The pump that I pulled off off the 86 that I'm rebuilding had some bearing play and noise in the bearing at 15k miles after install. I suspect the previous owner had overtightened the timing belt. The pump was a new Laso pump. I bought another new Laso pump and Wahler thermostat to go back in the car.

Hey V2. Thanks for the offer. I'll be tearing into this next week and see what it looks like. I may be getting in touch with you...lol. My last core I sent to them was only leaking. This one made quite a racket before totally seizing up.
