Default Feeler: Audi 4000 CS Quattro r&p (cross post from turbo forum)

Friend of mine has a parts car with trans and rear diff intact. These cars have the 4.11 ring and pinion, is anyone interested? I know the turbo guys snap these things up like hotcakes apparently.

Edit: and any other parts requests from it? Door handles look like a match but feel like plastic. The NA i5 is still intact but hasn't been run in 20 years.

This is a great mod, I owned a car with the 4.11 gear and it was a complete tire shredder, lots of fun in a car with the long 5th.

You know, you should save the rear diff. We can find out if the rear r&p will fit our differentials and if it differs from the front r&p on the Audi. I know the front is 4.11, I think the rear is too. The rear is also locking. We should see if it fits into my junk NA trans and go from there...You might end up keeping it At least you can sell the front one. Let's have some fun. I'll buy the rear diff from him/you if I have to.

...does the 4000 trans bolt into the 944?

Theoretically, yes. I think the input shaft is shorter or a different diameter/spline, I don't remember. The trans is also used in the Audi 5k. It has provisions for clutch/slave/starter. There is a fwd model too that doesn't have the rear output for a driveshaft.

I got to thinking...

The trans will most likely bolt up to stock mount/s...You can use existing axles...Why not attach a 10 or 20v turbo engine to the 4k 016 trans and make a mid engined 944? I need a bigger garage...

i was thinking audi motor in the front, switch the 4.11 trans to the back, and call it a 944000

Start with a K26/8 car and you'd have yourself a 944KQS

Looks like the pinion shaft is longer and has teeth on both ends to tie in to the rear diff.

Is the 4.11 r&p stronger than the unit in the 944/5000 tranny (which seems to fail a lot)?

Seeking the same info as well, particularly the strength relative to the 951 r&p.

Anyway, the trans will be in my hands this weekend... pics to follow!

According to Clark's gear ratio data, an NA with a long 5th will see ~4100 RPM at 70mph with this r&p transplanted in.

i dont know how much it translates into the 944 world but with trucks where diff gearing is changed frequently, the numerically higher the ratio the weaker the pinion because it has to get smaller.
so by that reasoning a 4.11 R/P should have a smaller/weaker pinion than the 3.889/3.375 etc.

So here's the scoop.

I'm not sure how to remove the pinion from the pinion shaft (if it can be removed at all). Obviously the pinion shaft can't be transplanted without machining... so would anyone want the pinion shaft and ring gear as-is?

The common swap around here is the S2 r&p into a 951 transaxle. The rings are pretty much the same size, but the teeth are smaller on the S2 (more teeth) which makes it a little bit weaker. So I'm guessing the 4000 r&p has even more, smaller teeth.

It will definitely be weaker, in order to achieve a higher ratio. Weaker still than the NA r&p.
The audi based 924 5 speed has that r&p. No machining required to install one of those.
