Default progressive wound spring orientation

When installing progressive springs, the tighter wound, easier to compress section goes in facing up right?

Are you asking about suspension or valvesprings?
Suspension springs place the tighter coils on top.
Valvesprings put the tighter coils on bottom.

Sorry, yes I meant suspension. Thanks, I figured they went in that way, made more sense since even compressing them by hand it felt "more progressive" with the tighter coils on top.

It makes zero difference in the way the spring acts.

I think it has to do with reducing the mass that has to move... On a valve spring, the tighter coils (more mas) is stationary, or down. On a suspension spring, the chassis side is the more stationary as the wheel moves up and down.

But, it's correct to say the spring rate - or how the spring acts - is no different in either direction.

You are correct in saying it makes no difference in how it acts. If you want to clutch at straws then with the tighter portion at the top you would have slightly less unsprung weight but that's about it.
