Default Strange Cruise/ Speedo Problem

I have a strange situation. I just bought this 1986 944 NA. It is a 5 speed. The speedo and odo do not work, but the cruise control works beautifully. Does this mean the speed sensor is good and I have a bad gauge? Any thoughts anyone?

Your speed sender is goog. Your gauge or the wiring to it is bad.

Anyone have a link to a tutorial on properly disassembling the dash to get the gauges out, so I can check the connections, etc. ???

There are ribbon connectors that plug into the back of the cluster. Give them a good clean with a cloth and some WD40 or other electrical connector cleaning fluid (there was one posted on here a couple of days ago).

Worth checking your odometer gear while you're at it.

By the way, don't be intimidated by this job, it really is very straightforward.

Be careful pulling off the connectors. They have little levers on them which are easily busted. To remove the connector, lift the levers away from the cluster and it will "cam" the connector off. To re-install, push the connector back on and the levers should move back into the lock position. A pencil eraser rubbed on the male connector contacts on the cluster is a tried and true method of cleaning contacts.

Update: Today I removed the gauge cluster. I did so without breaking any wires or connectors. While it was off I cleaned it, cleaned the connections with a pencil eraser, and I checked all of the bulbs. The connections looked pretty good, all of the bulbs passed testing. I re-installed the cluster, which I found more difficult than removing, and went for a test ride. The bad news is I gained nothing. I thought that I would at least have a working speedo, even if the odometer still didn't work. So, What do I check next? Is there some way to test the cluster outside of the car, so I can know what is the problem? Could it be the computer brain in the car not sending the signal to the speedo?
