Default porsche 944 from 10/1985 tachometer is not working

Hi

I have problem with my 944 the tachometer does not Work. I just bought the car, the guy i bought it from said it used to Work until they changed the motor. I have read somewhere else that there is a redplug on the passenger side under the carpet that controls the tachometer.

As far as i can see is the red plug on my car not connected anywhere and i cannot see where it should be connected, i have attached the Picture of it. Does anyone know where it should be connected?

Regards
Kamil

Yeah, the red plug has to be connected to that black plug. And, therein lies your problem.

The replacement engine came with a newer harness with a different style plug... So you'll have to look at some wiring diagrams and figure out which wire in each plug is the tach signal and then manually splice them together.

thanks for the reply. now it makes sense . But the thing is on the Black plug there is only to cables but on the red one there is 4 cables, how to pair these cables together any ideas? All gauge's on the instrument are working beside the tachometer.

One other question on the tachometer there's is small gauge which messaures the fuel economy is this one driven by the same cable to the tachometer?

Since you only have 2 posts, I'll assume you haven't found the search function yet... Here's a picture of the pinouts for the DME plug. You can see that pin 21 is the tach output. And pin 11 is the "economy gauge".

Sorry but i am a kind of newbie with this so i might i ask for the same again.

I thought that i should connect ref 1 in the image below with ref 2. The diagram is for ref 3 as far as i can see. Is it the cables from ref 1 that i should connect with the cables from ref 2 or how should i do. Any help will be preciated.

Yeah, the big white plug is the DME plug - that's plugged into the engine's computer (DME = digital motor electronics).

You undo that plug, figure out which is pin 21, and do a continuity test to find the right pin in the black connector.

But, if I had to make an educated guess, I'd say it's the green wire with the black stripe. Cut the plugs off, crimp those two together, and I think your tach will work.

thanks for the all replies i think i ill try it tomorrow and keep you updated.

Just to be sure the redplug goes upto the speedometer and black plug comes from the DME and i have to merge these to cables. I can not find any diagram on the cables from the speedometer does anyone have a link? Can i damage the speedometer if try merge cables by testing one by one?

The speedometer is powered a different way.

You can download the wiring diagrams, and all the factory service manuals, here: http://www.cannell.co.uk/Manuals_Original.htm
