can I disassemble a motor out of the car without a stand?
I am thinking of parting my 86 turbo motor and selling the usable parts. The cylinders have some scoring and some bent valves. If I do have a stand is the leverage required to crack head bolts too much that it will cause the engine on a stand to tip over? Jsut wondering if it is doable without a stand and any tips on how to do it.

If you use a good impact wrench you can remove any bolt on the engine without issues, even the crank pulley. The 3-wheel stands can get pretty awkward using a breaker bar.

I personally have a 4 wheel stand and wouldn't recommend attempting the job any other way.
My reasoning is that potentially risking my safety is not worth a few dollars saved.
Also, +1 on a good impact wrench making the job a bunch easier.

I can start tipping my four wheel stand on some bolts, dont even waste time with a three wheel stand.
Engine work CAN be done without a stand (I did a VR6 on a wooden table) but it is a monumental pain in the *** and risky.

When I have to tighten or loosen a strong bolt I just stand on the stand.
It's possible to disassemble an engine without a stand, but it's not easy and some parts could get dented or scratched. Just tip it on it's side and step on it to loosen the head bolts and main girdle bolts. You'll definately need some sort of flywheel lock or a strong impact gun to remove the crank pulley bolt.

OMG, you can take apart a motor anywhere, if you can't loose the crank bolt you can pull the crank with the oil pump pulley and gear. You can do it on the floor, a piece of plywood on bricks, on the bed of a truck etc etc.

As has been said, you can do this work on a bench. But it will save you time on a stand, and you can keep the assembly a lot cleaner, less risk of damage, etc. I found more than one listing locally on craigs list for stands for pretty reasonable price. And as one guy told me, you can use it for a week, month, or year and resell it for close to what you paid for it, or same price. You' won't regret it if you pick up a stand.
