Question Hole in bell housing...normal?

I was looking under the front end of my '86 today, preparing to do my first oil change on this car. I noticed a large hole in the driver's side of the bellhousing, just above what looks like is probably the starter. It's obviously supposed to be there, I assume it's for inspection (correct me if I'm wrong).

My question is...should the hole just be open? Or should it be plugged or covered in some way?

You will probably be ok with it open, but there should be a rubber plug in there. You can look in the PET for the part number.

I would definitely get the plug, they are pretty cheap. The hole is so big (it is intended as a visual inspection hole for the clutch/pressure plate) that a large item could get in and create issues for you. Meantime, if you have any of the aluminum that has adhesive on one side (used for sealing furnace duct work), tape some of this over the hole. That will keep things out until you get the plug.

They always fall out... I've yet to see a 944 with that plug in place!

When I installed mine, I put a bit of silicone on it. So far, two years later it is still in place.

Ok thanks everyone, I appreciate the advice. I'll get it plugged.

The aluminum tape that I mentioned above has a much better long term adhesive. The adhesive on Duct tape ages fairly quickly, but definitely would work until he gets a plug for it.

Are you talking about the stuff that is sometimes referred to as aircraft tape? Basically really thick aluminum foil that's adhesive on one side?

My plug has stayed in since I bought it in 2009. I don't think they just pop out, seems they just get tossed.

I've never heard it called aircraft tape. It is as you said, basically thick aluminum foil with adhesive on one side. Any new install of a furnace has this tape at the key joints. You can buy it at most hardware stores.
