Spencer..sounds like you need to ship the crank and the rods for checkout/modification. That way they are all matched and there are no further questions. 2 cents worth..just sayin.

Have many people been running these for long on their 944 turbo motors? Curious about the results so far.

I'm interested if anyone can confirm that the bearings this mod is said to rely on, an L6 Toyota application bearing CB1628H, is or will be discontinued by the manufacturer. Has anyone heard anything?

A simple google search tells me this is the bearing for the 2JZ-GE/GTE.

Its not going anywhere.

Run-of-the-mill bearings, yes. But the Clevite high performance versions of it, maybe. I tried ordering a set of .25mm undersize bearings for my machined crank and was told by four vendors they have been discontinued. I do have a set, but they arrived to me with some nicks in them because they were not packed carefully. The whole point of foing this mod is to take advantage of a higher standard bearing. I don't know if using the regular CB1628P bearing gets us anything.

Ah thats unfortunate, most cranks for these don't get machined down so it may be a bit of an edge case. If you can get a clevite you still get to get away from the soft Glycos. I have a feeling there are other high performance 2J bearings out there for you in .25mm.

I'm trying a set of Calico dry film lubricant coated rod bearings this season ... friend of mine showed me the ones he removed from his SP2 car after close to 50 hrs and they looked like new !

Basically a set of OEM Glycos which you send to Calico Coatings and they charge around $30.00 to coat the eight bearing shells.
I did consider the MM bearing mod but in the long run it's cheaper and safer to replace stock bearings every season ...

Just for the record....and to answer an earlier question (although not a turbo engine), we have been running Pauter rods with the MM bearing mod for close to a calendar year worth of PCA racing.

Lost some valve springs in January at Sebring in enduro and had valve stem seal particles and broken seal spring pieces throughout the oil system so we pulled the cooler to flush and the pan to clean.

While in there, pulled #2 bearing cap to check condition and these bearings were mint.

Swepco 20/5, high revs, front running car with a lot of grip.

We previously ran Swain coated bearings but replaced them every 1-2 seasons.

Let me put my confidence in this modification (which checks and trues both rod ends too) in perspective....., I have a brand new set of factory STD Glycos (coated) for sale for the price of plain bearings with free shipping....

Thanks. This is very useful information.

How about anyone running stock rods (heavier than Paiter rods I assume) with a turbo car (lower tension loads and higher compression loads)?

I am building a 944 8V NA engine with Pauter rods and the MM selected Clevite bearing. The box states it is a high performance bearing.

I am installing Glyco Swain P9 coated main bearings. I plan to use BradPenn semi-synthetic 10W-50 oil after the SAE 30 BradPenn break in oil.

Main and rod bearings should be good for at least 125 hrs, verify with annual Blackstone oil analysis.

Default Michaelmount123 944 rod mods

Michaelmount 123 are you still doing the stock rod mod that allows the NASCAR clevit bearings to be used on a stock crank?
please advise
Thanks

We are having good success at 8000 rpm and some manifold pressure with ACL Ford Cosworth race bearings with light custom Carrillo rods and Mahle “Evotec” style pistons. That’s another bearing option if making all custom parts, but that’s not a nearly as cost effective path as the solution in this thread.
