Default What grade winter oil to use in cold climate?

Where I live right now the temps are getting low, right now about -14 celsius. last year it did not go below -20 but it can potentially go down to -30 ish.

anyways i'm running thick 20w50 synthetic redline right now. it says it is good to down -15. right now when i start it with temps around -10 to -14 for the past few days, it takes like 10 seconds or so to go to 5 bar at idle and i'm worried it's not circulating properly.

I'm too busy with exams right now to change my oil but in 2 weeks I want to change the oil out to something thinner.

question is what should I change to ? redline has a 15w50 that is good till -20. i'm scared a 5/50 will be too thin and also the viscosity range is so wide

should I go with a 10/40 maybe? any recommendations of brand of oil? redline ?

5/50 shouldn't be too thin, it's 5 at low temps and 50 at high or operating temps.

Stick with the factory recommended viscosities. 10W40 for cold weather.

I'm also in BC, but it's a bit warmer In the Fraser Valley. -5C has been the lowest this year, and it won't get colder than -10C. I put 20W50 VR1 in last month, 2500 KM on it. Maybe I should go a bit lighter also.

Howdy ..
While any poster with the word "Engineering" in their sig clearly out-creds me,
I was pleased last winter with the low temp results of moving from Rotella 15w-40 dino to Rotella 5w-40 synth.

Both oils include sufficient ZDDP levels for our flat-tappets.. 1200+ppm.
Really made a nice difference on cold-crank mornings..
And ran 7,500+ miles on the synth with still good TBN/TAN readings from Blackstone after change-out.

M1 0w50 Racing oil and the 5w50 Rally oil is some of the best stuff for cold weather imo.

honorable mention for normal winter driving; M1, Amsoil, Redline, etc 10w40.

btw, I ran 0w40 for 3 winters, putting over 50 k miles of hard miles on my car with no issues before switching to 0w50 during the cooler months.. engine still burns near zero oil at 197 k miles.

dude.

many of our favorite oils' viscosity ratings are well over 200 at startup temp in the cold.

with the V-twin oil being so thick at startup I would think it best to avoid using it at 100% mix.

I too went from Shell Rotella 15W40 to Shell Rotella T5 (and now T6) 5W40.
I run this oil all year.

I am thinking of making the switch to Rotella also during my next oil change coming up. Currently running Royal Purple 15w40

M1 0w40 year round for me.
Turns over easily when below 0F, and starts protecting way sooner even in summer (I am of the opinion that most engine wear likely occurs during start up and warm up).
And it has a fairly high level of Zinc, though if all you care about is Zinc, you can get higher...
