Default 944 to passat 01E 6 speed gearbox conversion

I wanted to do this conversion for some time now .
A few weeks ago i stumbled on a cheap passat gearbox in great condition.
The casing is very similar to the 016 even more so than the 968 01E.
I haven't measured it yet but looks like the linkage will pass through the clutch cylinder hole ,if not minimal mods will be necessary.
The passat 01E has 114mm axle flanges and porsche has 100mm flanges. The good thing is they can be swapped with minimal machining to be done to the porsche flanges that are just 5mm longer but otherwise identical.
The 968 left short drive shaft i needed.
Passat 01E has a speed sensor but i don't know if it will work on the 944,we will see.
The 01E input shaft is 23 spline and 24mm instead of porsche's 25mm, the coupler will go into the splines but it's too loose , a custom coupler has to be made.
I will try to use the early 944 mounts ,always liked them over the late single mount.

If anyone knows where i can get a cheap 968 short axle please let me know.

Here are some pics

Awsome!

What year Passat was this out of? With what engine?
What are the power limits of this trans?
Does it come with a LSD?

I have been very interested in doing something like this. Thank you!

Passat 2001-2005 1.9TDI ,only 130hp model
Internet chatter says 600hp
No LSD on this one , that can be found in some Audis along with oil cooler.

Better gearing for highway driving
My car is a DD and with the short 5'th it's not very pleasant.

1st: 3.50
2nd: 1.89
3rd: 1.23
4th: .87
5th: .68 or .73
6th: .56
Final Drive: 4.11

A six speed would be perfect as long as the final drive ratio was unchanged (944 N/A). I hate the large RPM gap between 4th and 5th.

love it.

there are gears in the euro boxes we need people to hoard for the turbo and v8 conversions.

I've got a nice euro box.. This does seem like a nice project! But; what is a cheap gearbox by your vision? Because i've heard of people saying that they've got a cheap gearbox but i think cheap is 300 euro.. Other people say cheap is about 700.. ;-)

Nice project catamax!

Now according to shape, these two boxes share almost if not completely identical mechanical composition..

Is there a remote chance, that the 6th gear and whatever goes with it, would somehow fit in AOR box?

That would be nice.

That would mean that it would be way easier to fit it all in the car.. You don't have to adjust the shifter mechanism, the mount and the flanges! Good thinking Voith!

I got mine for 200 euro , usualy they go for about 4-500 here and most are not in such good condition.

I doubt the internals can be swapped from 01E to the 016 and i'm not inclined to find out since the gearbox i got is bone dry ,looks new , almost all 016's i saw have some kind of leaks.

Are bolt patterns on the red lines the same on both boxes?

My guess is that 6th is hiding in the end part that is longer to accommodate extra gear pair..

Wauw.. That's a real bargain! Maybe i'll check in the future to get one of my own.. The S2 gearbox will probaly last for a long while so i won't be needing it in the near future, but the idea is perfect!
