Location of coolant temp. sensor ?

Location of coolant temp. sensor ?
The car is an '87 944 na.
Do any of you know where it is located on the engine ? I think I have to replace it, the coolant temp needle seems to have a mind of it's own at times (jumps up and down). I figure it's the gauge or the sensor and the sensor is the easier of the two to replace. I can't find any loose connections anywhere and the car is definitely not overheating. Thanks for any help or suggestions.
