Default Lifter Noise 944S

A little back round, 87 944S, replaced with used head 1500 miles ago.
The car ran fine u until the noise.

On Friday I changed the oil from a thin 10-30 to 20-50, drove the car 250
highway miles at around 3500-4000rpm most of the way. Went to work on
Mon-Tue with no problems, On Wed half way to work it started to tap, it
would go away when revved and would stay quiet for 10-15 sec after that
then come back. Once fully hot it would just tap very loudly.

Got the car back to the shop and let it cool. Fired it up and it had the same
loud tap, revved it for 20 sec and the tap went away for about 5 min then
started coming back when hot, then full noise when up to temp.

Pulled the valve cover off and checked around, the tube to the tensioner
was fine and not leaking.I spun the engine with the starter and things are
getting oil. I checked all the lifters and found one very soft intake lifter,
had almost no resistance at all. Also found one ex lifter with a very small
amount of play all others were pumped up as they should be.

Is this normal to have a 75000 mile lifter fail so completely? Also I read
somewere that VW lifters were the same at half the price, does anyone
know what model and year they came from?

Thanks Steve

250 miles at 4,000 RPM, and no speeding tickets?!
