924 impulse buy Y or N

My wife dropped a quickly retracted when my eyes lit up, "I miss our 944T", but despite the retraction I've been thinking about a later model 944 or 968.
How much is knowledge of the 928 owning and fixing going to transfer to keeping a 4 banger happy?
Any issues with tire size on a 924 with Autox in mind?
I think putting it on a lift is a good idea, but I would put it to the seller like this after doing some more looking as best I could, offer less cash and you drive away as is, or have a PPI done before making an offer.
OTOH I would not skip the Carfax report, at least do an AutoCheck, which is about the same info and I think a touch cheaper. Talk to the shop that worked on it, see if it has anything needing attention they know about.

Thanks, Randy, for making this thread stupid and vulgar.
A 924S is a great choice for a fun autox or DE car. Cheap and light. It's really good as a 1st competition car as it handles well and will let you learn to drive. Far too many guys equate power with quickness and end up spending a lot of money to be mediocre. Don't worry about bragging about times and enjoy yourself.
I track my '87 944 and my 928. The 928 has more than twice the power and is only 20% more fun. And I've got 10x more money into it.

I had a '84 944. Brown metalic. Bought it with 6700 miles and sold it with 30K. It was a very tight car. The paint was not good and if you looked at it wrong it would chip and show the galvanized body. It was creak and noise free. No real power. There seemed to be a gear missing between 4th & 5th. There was a huge blind spot on either side by the 'C' pillar where a semi could hide. The side mirrors could never be adjusted properly to get rid of the blind spot because the mirror itself did not have enough curvature (convex) in it.
Got out of breath at near 80-90mph. Seating position was awkward. Too flat. Always gave me major pain in the hip and knee joint after long drives.
Don't really miss it.
Love my 928's any day.

Ran an Autocheck and came back clean. Three owners. Odometer discrepancy, but I knew that the title was TMU. Owner said he bought it with a broken odometer @70k miles and he put another 20k on it. Condition of the car matches that statement IMHO. If the PPI is good I'll have have my started racer. Woo Hoo. Plus I like having that big sun roof - since my 928 doesn't have one.

Guys, I am by no means comparing a 924 to a 928 or pretending I'm buying a supercar. I already own a REAL supercar (My 928)... I am a hard core 928 guy. I've owned 5 of them. I've also owned two 911's and like 928's better in EVERY way. That being said, I've always wanted to race. I'm a decent driver on the street, but when I took a Lambo on the track in Vegas I discovered I don't know sh$t about racing. I want to learn how race properly. I don't need speed (yet) and I want to stay with the marque I love most. PORSCHE.

Anyone with 928 experience won't have any issues working on the 968, but the rennlist assistance is no where near what it is for the 928. More on your own with the 968 and tech help. 944 tech help on rennlist is pretty good, and there are lots of similarities on the 89 and later 944s.

I am sorry if I came across as bashing the 924/944.
Was just giving you my experience with mine.
I have a friend who is selling his track ready 944. I am looking for the info and will post when I find it.

For $1500 in that condition, I would be all over it. You can get that for it if you decide you aren't happy with it. I agree with others who say skip the PPI. Every one that I've seen that wasn't a non running, ratted out 77-79, the asking price was at least twice what he is asking. Should be a fun ride! Good luck
You won't have too much problems working on a 944 motor if you have worked on the 928. As docmirror said, the systems are a bit different, but it's basically half a 928 motor with a turbo strapped to it. I know that's really oversimplifying it, but it's all just parts put together with nuts and bolts.

You're lucky I am in Maryland for at least another month or I would have bought that car already. For the area that car is a steal.
I bought a non-running 944 parts car for $800 over the summer.
Where in NJ are you I'm in Mahwah.

I have kept a casual eye out for a 944 or 924 as a race car project for years...i agree this is a good price so i jumped on it. I'm in Montville and it being local is a major plus.

This looks like a really good deal. Looks like the interior is in good shape, but the body has a few dents. Don't worry too much about fitting fat tires under the fenders - I have 16x7 and 16x8 wheels on my car, and I'm able to run plenty of tire for track events.
I'm sure someone has already said it, but make sure the timing belt and waterpump are up to date and put new tires on it, and you should be all set for your first DE event (you'll need a helmet too probably). I think the 924S is a very fun momentum car, and it is a lot of fun on the track
