Question 88 Piston pictures - are these useable?

Bought a set of 88 pistons and they arrived a little banged up. Any input if these are useable?

Buyer states he will refund if not useable - I thought they looked pretty bad but I am no engine builder so figured Id ask the group.

Thanks,
Sam

Sam,

I am of the same ilk as you... Not an engine buillder, but if I was going to spend the time to get the pistons out, there is no way I would put those in a car. They look neglected and abused.

Take them to the local machine shop and have the inspect and measure. Need to know size, roundness etc. plus a professional opinion of the damage. They may be able to repair them too.

Bring them to a engine machine shop and let them measure them compared to you bore size.

those High spots could be taken down with a stone.

Are those the higher compression pistons? will they fit my '85? Cause if so they are junk and you should sell them to me

Kidding...........but seriously.........

I agree, a lot of the pistons I've seen in these engines have some dings from previous valve contact. Nothing drastic as long as they measure up and the dings are smoothed out. You can always have them recoated (SwainTech) to cover any areas where the original piston coating has been compromised.

And yes those are 10.2cr pistons, unique to the MY88. Prior to that they were 9.5cr in the US and 10.6cr in the ROW market. In MY89 they upped it again to 10.9cr. They will fit any 2.5, all the rods and pin locations are the same, compression was changed by the design of the top of the pistons only.

Engine guy said they are no good.

Cone_eater on rennlist conveniently turned off his pm's after I let him know and hasnt logged back on. Nice! In case he returns Id advise you to stay away from that guy.

They will be fest trophies I guess, expensive ones lol.
