Exclamation Show me your tool (thermostat removal)

This is the tool I have used in the past to remove the snap ring for the thermostat. I found out it is broke. So I need to get a replacement. Show me what you use to get in that tight space.

Tried this tool once. Great design but poor qaulity. It broke as soon as I put tension on the tool and I ended up throwing away.

I used this to test right when I installed my new pump before buttoning things up. Worked great. Note: I grinded the tips to fit the snap ring.

Harbor Freight special.

A good pair of 45 or 90 degree snap ring pliers will work, the absolute most important thing is the direction the snap ring is facing. One way will take a few minutes to get out, the other way will take you an entire day.

Also wear eye protection when you work on it.. the likely hood of breaking a tool is high and it can send that thing flying.

Freaken snap ring...

What the world needs is a fool-proof specialty tool that will get at that snap ring without fuss, no matter how corroded in there... I'm just say'n...

I hope I put in the right way when I put in the water pump. I put it so the opening is towards the bottom of the pump. Maybe around the 6 o'clock or 7 o'clock position.

I wonder why that snap ring is so strong? It's not under a lot of pressure. Maybe just a bit of temperature extreme. It sure would be easier if it was 1/4 as hard to squeeze.

I used a pair of needle nose pliers with good teeth to get mine out last night, no problem at all took less than 30 seconds.

Of course my water pump was out of the car but I think you could probably use the small angled needle nose pliers
