That happened in my car. I thought it was the transaxle, but no...the bell housing on the TT shattered. No idea how or why, maybe just a bad casting that started to crack, and came completely apart as the flex increased. The trans only has 4 bolts holding it to the TT bell housing, and the 2 bolts on the elastomeric mount.

The resultant flex in the driveline eventually sheared the driveshaft...here is a complete post on Pelican I did. Not at all a common failure, but there it is...

I've seen one other car do that, shatter the rear bell housing, but not sure why.
