Default Wheel Alignment - Really?

I called the local dealership, 'Prestige Porsche' to try and get an idea of what it would cost to get the wheels re-aligned after my front suspension upgrade, ball joints and monoballs; they quoted me 3.5 to 5.3 hours at 127.00/hour! Are they sh*tting me?

Tie rods, same as other cars, not worn out - check.
Camber adjust, eccentric bolts - check.
New shocks, ball joints, monoballs - check.
New turbo sway bars and new bushings - check.
Any damage? no.
Rear end? new shocks.
New rear sway bar, new bushings
Original height - check.
Good, lightly used tires.

How does this compute with a $49 alignment special?

I get my alignments done at a local Sears... $69...

The tech that does them even has (in his tool box) all the special tools for the 944 as a former track junkie set him up for his twice weekly alignments...

Firt time he did my alignment, it was a 5 hour affair, as he was breaking lose the 25 year old hardware in the rear!

+1. They quote that because releasing the 20+ year seized hardware on the rear end can take over 3 hours. Also, JoKA's case isn't typical, as there are also a lot more adjustments than on a minivan (where they likely are only doing the alignment because the minivan in question drove over a curb).

As painful as it is to admit, you really do get what you pay for in a 944 alignment. I willingly spent $400 last year to correct a terrible $140 alignment job, and will likely do it again this year.

Well, for our brothers in the great white north...

My couch is always available, come down, get an alignment, make a weekend of it... some good southern BBQ, friends, and an alignment... what more could you ask for?

Yeah, I just got my 951 aligned last week after installing bilstein cup coilovers, monoballs, camber plates, torsion bar delete etc. $309 at Music city porsche and audi. I was thinking it would be more like $200ish. I asked for 1.25-1.5 neg camber at the rear and 1.5 at the front with slight toe in. I would think $300-400 if it included corner balancing but not in this case. I newly zinc plated every piece of hardware before install so no seized bolts either. I wasn't going to complain about the price since they were very pleasant to deal with and did a decent job but might look for someone else in the future if I'm too lazy to align it myself.

$80 for 4 corners. They even let me give them specs. They provided the printout upon completion (who knows if its real), but the car has never handled better.

Its a small chain of local tire stores.

I do my own alignments, but they take several hours.

there is a local shop here in Memphis that did one for me last week for $79. I got their name from one of the local Porsche independents.

I paid $150 for my 951 last year, going back again for my S2 this year.

Well if they can get it on the lift...

Crap, at those sorts of prices one of these would seem to pay for itself pretty quickly...

Have you tried a VW dealer? It will look familiar to them. I went to a local indy fleet shop for mine, $90 and he put it exactly to spec. Same price as he charges for any 4-wheel alignment.

I don't mind paying for an alignment, just not 600 after-tax dollars. In fact, after I posted this thread I went back on the computer and a couple of posters lead me to We Tune! So I went there after work and spoke to them. Not only is their shop rate 2/3rds of the stealers, they quoted me 200 so I booked in in a week or so. Great guys, helped me with advice on another repair, showed me a turbo with a neat oil cooler mod they had in bits and offered the use of his shop manuals!
John, a visit and a barbecue would be a hoot, but the tires would be shot before I got there! Perhaps after an alignment?
Now I'm fussed that I didn't change the camber blocks too, if I have to buy an alignment I might just buy monoballs for those too.

i spend 120 for a four wheel alignment on a car with four wheel steering o its a 20yr old car so all the bolts are nice and rusty. especially when you consider it's daily driven including snow.
