Default 924 GTS Replica out of a 951?

So let’s play a game of: Good Idea or Bad Idea.....

I have a long time obsession with the 924 GTS, and owning a real one isn't something that is going to happen any time soon, so what to do? Of the two 951s I picked up recently one of them is an 86 and I have this crazy notion that it might make a good 924 GTS candidate. The front end of the 951 wouldn't be too difficult to swap over, and I understand that the back end would require a lot of cutting and welding, but is this a good idea or a bad idea?

My parts shopping list would look something like this:
944 Fenders
924 Turbo Header Panel
944 or 924 Headlight Covers
924 GTS Fiberglass Front Bumper Cover
944 Turn Signals / Fogs
924 GTS Hood Scoop
924/44 Fixed Headlights
924 Rear 1/4s
924 GTS Rear Fender Flairs
951 Fuchs (already picked these up)

Some of those parts are hard to come by, namely the 924 Turbo header panel with plastic inserts, but for the most part I think it would be fairly easy to source the bits.

And then I would have a few bits to sell to help offset the costs:
951 Fenders
951 Bumper Cover
951 Header Panel
951 Headlight Covers
951 Fogs / Turn Signals
951 Rear Diffuser
951 Side Skirts
Cup 2 Replica Wheels

This is the car in question:

I'd spare the 951 and convert a 924S to GTS with a 951 motor. Much less cutting work required there. Plus you could sell the 951 for probably two or three times what a 924S needing paint costs.

As long as you have time funds, tools, space, time and patience to do it... then do it!! I think it would be a cool project!

Cheaper and it would be more faithful to the original. Besides, you'd wind up explaining every time you went anywhere why your CGT has an oval dash.

I have thought about starting with a 924S, it does seem like a nice platform to build off of, and it wouldn't involve the rear 1/4 panel efforts, but I worry about costs getting out of control as I try to bring the performance up to snuff.

gt racing makes the header panel for the 924gts

i would suggest starting with a blank 924(no engine or trans)

or if intent on using the 951, use the box rear fenders that were used on the GTR

Well there is a 924S with a lot of FG work F/S by Josh B. That would be my starting point. Then snag a whole 86 951 suspension and drivetrain.

Alway loved the look of the 924GTS. As previous posters stated you may want to find a good 924 shell to start with and transfer the turbo goodies over as best you can. Or take the 951 and simply redo the front bodywork leaving the rear fenders intact. A bit of a hybrid concept but much easier (and less expensive) in the long run. the GTS was the inspiration for the body styling changes I did on my car. I had some cost limitations as well so I couldn't go as far as I wanted to with it. It's your car......make it what you want it to be!

Josh's 924 GTR project is an option, the car has a good number of the parts needed to complete the 924 GTS look. I think the only parts needed to complete the body would be front fenders, rear flairs, and the hood scoop (and a lot of paint and bodywork).

I would then need a buyer for the graphite 951, but I don't think that would be too much of an issue.

Either way you're going to be in for a lot of paint and bodywork! I would think a 951 would be much easier to sell than a 951 modified to look like a CGT.

seems like all a lot of time and money for very little gain. at least the 1988 944T owns a stake in 1980s junior supercar lore. but if that weren't enough, it's also going to be a fake ? ....of course, your dream of owning and maybe even driving an obscure car that no one, (but perhaps, 0.0000027 %) of the general public has even ever heard of, just might be the juice... that entices you to finish building such a car. (or to put it another way, for some of us, driving a 944, 968 or 928, just isn't weird enough)... if you want to hear my opinion, (and it's totally ok if you don't), i think your hard earned dollars would be far better spent on an old 911, 944 or 944T — not a downconversion... or what about doing a 924S ?...

in the end, it's for you to decide what your dream should be... i'm spending a lot of money building up a car that Porsche doesn't even know exists... my finished 968 would never be welcome at one of their tea parties. frankly who cares ? it's a halfway decent car — even if owners of the vaunted 911 think i'm nuts.

i'd spare the 951, it looks too nice to start hacking on it. it's not like you really know it or have any sentimental attachment to it. i'd find a 931 as a base, that would give you a good original platform. i'm sure ideola could hook you up w/everything you need and would like be cheaper in the long run. just my .02

I would take 924S and use a 951 drivetrain. The 924S gives you the narrow rear fenders that Porsche started with on th 924GT an GTS. Plus it will get to the early dash which I think is critcal for making a 924 Carrara GT conversion. I think using the 951 drivetrain makes sense for easy of power and availablility.
