1984 Porsche 944 2.5L DME (ECU) question
I have a 1984 944 NA. It has the stock DME right now. I want to chip it using the FRWilk chip. The problem is that I need to get the signle chip DME with the EPROM instead of the 4 ROMs one that my car has.
I want to keep my stock ECU and buy a new one for the chip.
Here are my options:
1. Buy a 1984/85 ECU, buy a BMW -027 ECU, buy the FRWilk powerprom, do some splicing
2. Buy a late (1985.5+) model na ecu and buy the powerprom. Would this second option work? Do i need to replace the AFM as well, i think i do but why?
3. I do not want to buy the FRWilk adapter so that is not an option.
4. Would a BMW 027 ECU accept the powerprom chip without the need for frankensteining a porsche ecu?
5. Would any Porsche 944 NA ecu work in the 1984? Probably not, but why?
Please point me in the right direction. I will greatly appreciate it. Thanks

Thank you for the help. I'm not looking for much power gains or anything. Just something to fiddle with. So with the late dme, the 12v signal only affects afm and no other component? What about stuff that controls injectors etc. All the same signal as the early dme? Sorry if the question sounds stupid.

The 968 engine alone is around 3k. Plus there will be other parts required, may be a new transmission too. So that would put the cost around 8k with installation. I bought my entire 944 for 6k. Its a bit much for an 84 na but my car had 37k when i got it and it was in storage for about 10 years. I want to keep it mostly stock. Only things I'd like to change are the ones i can uninstall myself. :-)

Thanks guys, really appreciate it. Search starts for a late model DME or AFM. Or I might sell the car and get a later model with lots of miles to mess with.

If it were me and since you're looking at a late DME anyway, I'd consider a late DME and Miller MAF+chip combo

not sure if specifically '89 will work as those were 2.7L cars. someone here would be able to say. At the least to widen your scope you can look for an '86 and up DME and AFM. my 944MAX chip was plug and play for my '86.
