Three Wheelin'
I have more $ in my car than I can even remember, BUT! Going to swap meets, buying parts off craigslist, and sharing parts as things get upgraded is such good fun. I bought my first 951 when I was 23, Totally took it apart and just did everything at once.. Now I could afford a 911 but for some odd reason just love the comfort, ride of a 951. I have acquired many parts over the years and just purchased another Turbo-s to go racing. I expect to have about 15K Total in it. The biggest cost is the suspension as far as I can figure.. Bought a nice basket case for 6k, Roll cage is almost done Tube= $450 (I do my own fab), wiring is "consolidated" and painting the interior this weekend. Just going to do DE's this summer while I build the race motor, I have a monster Street motor that Im putting in for the summer, while I apply for the PCA Racing licence. Besides, 400 hp at 2700 should be fun! Ill put a post up of the build start to finish. once it is complete..
BTW Grenadier, Did the Dog come with the car?

$100 paint job
I bought this two years ago for $1300 with new tires, fuel pump, reference sensors. Replaced belts and water pump, clutch master cylinder for pretty cheap. Got a good set of valves and springs on here for $50. Steering rack rebuilt steal from Rockauto for $138 so I'd say still under $2000. I don't intend to lose money on these deals although I might end up working on them for $2 an hour. Runs great just needed paint. Don't know why the pictures are upside down.
The paint was good in some ways, bad in others. I figured out (after 3 tries with a Civic) how to do body work, but even after cleaning my garage and wetting the floor there was still a lot of dust around. If after a thousand miles everything is good I'll paint it again or put a coat of clear on it.

I don't want to add up the '83....but it's a hell of a car now.
$3400 purchase price
$300/yr on average in maintenance
Most expensive things have been the Megasquirt setup ($1200) and the Classic 9 dash ($900 all-in incl shipping).
I've probably spent $2k on other misc. things like interior, brake upgrade, bushings, sways, and other areas where there was potential to improve.
My 951 has driven 0 miles since I got it.
$2500 purchase
$300 for the engine from a '82 NA parts car
$950 for engine rebuild kit
$80 for fuel lines
$120 for early control arms, ball joints, poly pushings, rear clips, and sway bar links
$300 for the wideband, EGT, and boost gauge combo from 14point7
$60 for SS braided brake lines
$120 for the water pump
$300 for head rebuild
....it hurts, I can't keep adding this up. There's way more and I haven't even built the MS for it yet...

I realized the other day that my car has been on the road since my resurrection of it from non-runner status for over 2 years now. I bought it for $1200, and put $3k into it immediately -- it needed some accident repairs, belts, fuel pump, WP, tires, and shortly thereafter a clutch. I'm doing some hoses under the intake at the moment, and checking the belts, but I expect the cost to be well under $100.
In the last year and a half since finishing the resurrection, it has needed nothing -- just oil changes, washing and waxing. Granted I have only put 10k miles on it, but that's as much as I put on any of my other DD's in the past, and I couldn't say all of them went this long without trouble. And this last summer I took a 3500 mile trip in it without incident.
Further evidence of the difference in maintenance requirements between NAs and turbos.

So I have a grand total including purchase price of $5,500 into my car, not bad for 7 years' service. I could throw it away and feel like I was money ahead.

I think I have about 3500-4k cash into my 931 by now but half of that or better is just mods.
Once I get all the mods prototyped up correctly to where I'm happy with them for the long term I will go back and make everything more perfect like maybe stainless IC piping to replace my not so good looking schoolbus coolant system piping, better looking clamps, make it pretty..
Then I can throw $1500ish into engine internals and a rebuild, $1500 into suspension, maybe $500 in the trans, another $1000 for randoms, another couple hundred or so in breaks, wheels/tires..
I'll prolly have $10K into it, and be very happy with that I believe..
By time I'm done with it good examples of 931's will probably be worth $10k and I'll be sitting on a solid 300HP or so with breaks and LSD to contain it on an extremely nimble and light chassis..
I'm pretty comfortable with putting that kind of money into my Porsche eventually long term and think it will be great bang for the buck performance wise wrapped up into a classic sexy German package..
What more to ask for?
Even if I end up with $15k into it, I think that's OK..

I never understood why people didn't tally up their 944 expenses.
After two years of ownership, I understand. It's probably a few grand more than I think it is.
Car had 86k miles when I purchased it with an exterior and interior in very good condition.
However, as I started working on solving the leaks, one thing quickly lead to another and almost every seal and gasket has now been replaced. Suspension and brakes now perfect.
Next winter I want to drop the fuel tank and replace everything rubber back there.
I wouldn't want to own this car without doing my own work - that's really a big part of the hobby and keeping it 'affordable'.
