My dad and I made this for our 928S:
As you can see, the huge window was removed and the top of the opening (where the top of the window used to be) was cut and moved farther down, thus lengthening the 'roofline' on the hatch.
Primer. Here you can see the shape!
Picture of it on the car as it now sits:
As you can see, we didn't lay the deck flat. We added a bit of curve, or a wave in the center of the deck - so essentially, the deck of the hatch is a 'W' shape. We think it compliments the lines of the car.
It isn't painted yet. The bodywork still isn't PERFECT. The top hatch roofline isn't exactly right and needs to be hammered out to match the top of the car. We're still working on it, but we haven't had much time, lately. I'm thinking of giving it to a good friend at a bodyshop to finish the work and paint it as a Christmas present for my dad. I can't wait to see it painted myself! I think it really gives the car a sinister look!
Oh - and we didn't use any cheap materials, either. This thing was created old school... no fiberglass or plastic here! We used 1/8" thick steel which was shaped and welded by hand! It wasn't easy... but the results are beautiful. Again... I can't wait to see it painted.

what the hell is that second pontiac pic ? is that the final edition of the Fiero GT ??
if so, pretty sharp looking from behind (considering) it's a 20 year old Pontiac.
do you have a photo of the 928 just sitting on the driveway under natural light off the jack ? be very interesting to see that.

ive always thought making it look more like a cab while retaining the hatchback functionality would be ideal. basically making it look like this but as a hard top:

F40 LM, we'll have to talk haha...
I've thought about this a bit. as much as I love the glass, it is kinda heaving and annoying, I never got around to sketching concepts for a new design though.
As for the Clear timing cover, that'll have to be on the list soon as well.
I'll make a post about a project I've been thinking of for a while, just so busy right now...

here are some pics of the custom built one i picked up off of craigslist, i believe it's a 968 hatch with the glass removed and a fiberglass and steel shell built onto it

it's a 1 off...the one problem i had with it was it cut my trunk space SIGNIFICANTLY...i used to be able to stack stuff up back there (going to and from college) when i put the hatch on it literally cut the space in half.
here's a pic from when i had it installed...i've since gone back to the glass hatch because i kinda liked it a little better, and the window fell out the hatch and broke....

Yeah, I can see how the rear compartment shrinks. I'm thinking the New Hatch needs a steel or aluminum frame to be thin enough to follow the existing body lines. Sail panels don't really look right IMO.

Some great ideas thrown around guys. I agree the design has to follow the originall lines of the car or it will never look quite right.
Someone mentioned that one of the first pics I posted looked like the new 918....in the vein of keeping an open mind guys.....I think MAYBE the straight lines of the 918 rear 'hatch' reminds me of the fender lines. Not saying.....just saying.
I really like the amount of response this thread has got so far, please keep it up. ALL opions welcome, think outside the box, we have not seen a 'new' hatch design for so long for our car so don't be shy.
