Maybe my rods and ends were switched out with the "vw mod" I've heard of at some point.

Now the question is, do anybody else's 015 racks have female rod ends?

The inner tie rods have nothing to do with the rack...... they are a wear item like the outer tie rods.
On all manual racks the inner part of the inner tie rod is female. The 944 inner tie rods have female outer ends, therefore you need male outer tie rods.
Manual inner tie rods from a Mk2 VW like the ones Butters has, coupled with 944 PS outer tie rods, would also work. (a necessary stop ring can not be installed on the VW inner tie rods )

*thread necro*

I've found a steering rack in Japan, it looks manual, but as they drive left and right hand drives there I'm not sure what I'm looking at. It says its ptno 944 347 015 00. Is it left or right?

im guessing this one above is a LHD manual sport.

This is how mine looks like.

Pictured here are long tie rods that convert manual steering rack to later offset.

Part number for these is VO-AX-7181, the other VW number for this part is TA1283

Manual rack bellows/boot alternative numbers are Seinsa D9014 and D9090

Tie rod ends for this combination are the following part numbers: Lockheed - Delphi TA770 ,BMW : 3211 1116 463, Volvo : 3211955 - 3265974 ,Volkswagen : 171 419 812

Very cool thanks.

For any right hookers researching in the future, I've been corresponding with a gent in the UK. There is no difference in the RHD steering shafts between power and manual racks. LHD cars have different part numbers for power and manual shafts but RHD shaft part numbers are the same for both versions.
