Replacement hydraulic lifters?
I have atleast one bad lifter. Every morning at startup I can hear "clack a clack a clack" which then quiets down, but is always audible especially at low speed between 2-4k revs.
I have traced the noise to the rear of the cam tower possibly the exhaust lifter.
Won't really know until actual inspection...
Anyway advice on any of this/where to get replacements?
87 944na 175k miles; tried Marvel mystery oil before last oil change. Now running 15w50 MobilOne

I keep hearing bad things regarding new lifters? That your better off finding a good original set.
I am all about using new parts, if they are good!
Also why are NA lifters 2x more than S lifters? Because you need half as many, and that is how part suppliers rob me..... I guess.

I just replaced all 16 lifters in my S2 with "These" VW lightweight racing lifters for half the price of OEM.
16 lifters x $15 is alot better than 16 x $39. Search the 928 boards for the info, our lifters are 928 parts anyway.
Call Roger at 928sRus.com (yes, he's a sponsor here) and he'll know exactly which part you need at a better price than is shown on the link.

The S lifters are different but there is a replacement that fit the NA's.
As far as using OEM, do a search for the info on the 928 boards and you will see the the VW lifters are used by quite a few of them.
The OE lifters today are made by INA which also makes the VW lifters.
The only difference is that it doesn't say Porsche on the box. Materials are the same and the quality seemed better than the ones I took out.

How did these work out for you? I just bought 16 of them and measured them up. I don't know if I am comfortable with them..

I dug up my notes that I kept on these and here is what my situation looked like. Assuming that what I took out of the car were Porsche Lifters of course. The "Original" were 1.007" tall, 1.379" Diameter, and the pushrod height (the part that touches the valve stem. Measurement taken when deflated.) was 0.264" tall. The ones from Motorsport are 1.029" tall, 1.364" Diameter, and Pushrod was 0.278. These measurements are an average of all 16 old and then all 16 new. When I pulled the new ones out of the bag, the sides had some blemishes on them. If I drug my finger nails on them, they would catch. So I used Scotch Bright and basically no pressure to smooth it out. After installing these I did notice that I have lost some oil pressure. Instead of 3 - 3.5 bar hot it is now 2.75 - 3.25 bar. Even still, I would also recommend these. Ive been using them now for about 3,000 miles for whatever that is worth to you. Good luck.

The only option for replacement lifters on the 8v engines are good used ones, or going with a Lindsey Racing solid lifter conversion, which isn't cheap.
I really don't know why the major auto parts manufacturers don't make replacements. the 944 market isn't THAT small!

Most of the time lifters just need a cleaning to fix the morning ticking. I would try to avold using a used lifter on a used camshaft. Flat tappet lifters get married to the camshaft. FYI, rollers can be swapped around no problem.

I know, though quite a few people here have casually swapped in random used lifters with few problems, at least that they are reporting here. I had a shop hone the bottoms of a set from my engine in such a manner as to make them 'like new'. I'll be running these on a cam reground by webcam.com.
