Angry Oil Cooler Leak Will Cause Coolant in Oil?

I serviced my 85/2 944 oil cooler and found that the oil cooler had a leak. I also found coolant in the oil. I had not driven the car after servicing the oil cooler, I just started the car and found I was loosing coolant and when I drained the oil, coolant came out also.
It's been said that a blown head gasket causes oil/water mixture. Will a leaky oil cooler also cause oil/water mixture.

Sounds like something was not put back together properly. Usually the oil will get into the coolant since it has more pressure. What do you mean by "the oil cooler had a leak" ? From the seal around the edge ? Do not run the car anymore till this is solved, the coolant can destroy the rod bearings. Possible you got the wrong o-ring for the relief valve ? THere are 3 types of relif valves; Early style uses a piston and spring with no o-ring, 85.5 thru 86 use a 1 piece relief valve 944 107 035 11 and it uses o-ring 999 707 145 40 . Starting in '87 the relief valve is smaller ( 944 107 035 02 ) and uses o-ring 999 707 144 40. Hope this helps !

What I ment by "The oil cooler had a leak" was that the oil cooler element had a couple of holes which showed when it was subjected to air pressure and immersed in water. I also suspected the one piece oil pressure relief valve which I took from an engine which was sitting around was not working. Would the oil pressure relief valve cause coolant to mix with oil rather than oil in coolant? Apart from a blown head gasket causing coolant to go to the oil is anyone confident what other problems will cause the same effect - coolant to oil?

Additionally, I plan to re-use the three-piece oil pressure relief valve that was in the cooler initially together with the older type oil cooler housing. Afterall this was the design the car had from the factory!

I got a good used Oil Cooler, replaced the Relief Valve "O" ring, and used the special to center the cooler and that solved the problem.

Thanks for the reply. I'm trying to trouble shoot a leak of both coolant and oil, in what looks to be the same spot. I won't be sure until I get the lower body work off.
