Angry My gas needle is on crack...need drug test, what could it be???

For the past 7 years of owning the car the gas needle has been acting a little weird. Tonight the sucker was dancing all over the place like a raver on ecstacy. The needle on the temperature gauge is fine and doesn't jump, I don't think it could be a bad gauge... What could it be???

Did you check the fuel sender? Maybe it's acting up or the plug is coming loose or needs some cleaning.

go to www.rennbay.com under tutorials

I dug up a good tutorial on fixing the fuel sender connections and put it on there. It was made for a 911 but the process is about the same.

As an appendix to the tutorial on rennbay you might want to check a 944 specific tech session on paragon that shows how to check the fuel sender. Good for before/after comparisons and to make sure the sender is in working order after cleaning. Tech Session

Having the same problem, except mine usually sits at the E mark and occasionally dances around. If the weather ever improves here I will check the grounds

3 porsches and 3 fuel gauges not working right. On the 924 I cleaned the connector at the fuel sending unit and it has worked great ever since. Just unplug it and clean any corrosion and plug it back in. Easy to get to as well, just pull up the carpet in the rear hatch area and pull the big round floor plug out and you will see the wire connector to the fuel sending unit.

remembering, remembering, on the top of the sending unit one of the poles that the electric connector snaps on to was loose from the sending unit too. I think I tighened it down to the sending unit in some manner so it made better contact with the rest of the sending unit. Then I re-attached the electric connector. Sorry I forgot this before, its been 2.5 years since I fixed it
