I cant charge my A/C! gauge doesnt fit! Whats the solution? PICS inside
So the low side refill port is on the a/c compressor on my early 85 944. As you can see the fitting doesnt screw into the port bc it is too close to the adjacent bracket. I need the A/C compressor hooked up and running with my gauges reading the pressures or I would just pull the stupid compressor out. Are my gauges just too large or is there a trick that I dont know about? Thanks in advance

Dude... you're doing that all wrong. First, the 944 is an R12 system. Consumer recharge kits are for the more modern R134a.
Second, your hose there is supposed to connect to an "adapter" that then goes on the fitting on the car.
I suggest you take your car to a competent shop and have this taken care of.

If I am reading it right you are using a AC manifold set? Actually the early cars have to be tapped at that port and many people pull the OE Schrader valve and put a right angle extension/valve on them if they have to open the system. My 83 was a bear to charge but the 86 and 87 have the ports on the DS fender where I can get to them. Hopefully your manifold is R-12 threads because if not you need the thread adaptor set. Does your gauge set have scales for both R-12 and R-134a? If you're not sure take it to a good AC shop and save yourself some system damage.

i had to find a special 90* fitting that fit the r12 fitting and then got out of the way and has a thread on the other end for the r134 fitting.
i actually took my car to an ac shop to get the work done and they turned me away because they couldnt get to the valve.
did it myself and saved $150

Van, you comment doesnt pertain to my situation and is not helpful. I know my system is R12. I have R12 manifold gauges and R12 Freon to put in my R12 system. I am a competent mechanic thus no need for me taking it to a shop. I've recharged MANY a/c systems to date.

NAPA carries both the 90 degree adapter (R12/R12) (R12/R134) and the shortened drive belt for the compressor.
The shorter belt allows just enough room to get the belt on, and a little more clearance for the connector at full tension on the belt.
It has been awhile, so I do not have the NAPA part #

Got my 90 at NAPA and if you know what you're doing you can do a high side charge... but if you don't, don't even think about it.

yesterday while i was fixing my steering rack issue i got out my grinder and ground off the bottom portion of the bracket that is in the way, but still left enough material for the alternator to be happy.
much more room there for my fitting.

For anyone interested in the solution to this problem....
Go to NAPA and buy belt# 25-050390 This belt is 1005mm (39.5" +/-) which is shorter than the original belt I had on which was 1031mm (40.5" +/-)
This new belt rotated the low side port enough that I'm able to get my manifold gauges on the fitting.
