Lifter issues after new webb cam 84 944na
I have an issue with a new Webb cam. I put the tower on but I am pretty sure in the process I screwed up the order of the lifters. I cycled the motor before the initial start up and found no issues. As soon as i fired it the lifters made a horrid clattering noise. Is this because of the order or a bigger deal. Any ideas would help.
Thanks
Also looking for new lifters. Lol

You really should replace the lifters when you get a new cam anyway......BUT, I think you lifters just went flat. Run it 20min or so and see what happens.
Then run it around town for a bit, and replay with the results of the new cam. I've wondered how a new cam makes our engines run.

Another thought I had.... Does your new cam have higher lift? If it does, I believe you need either taller lifters, or a shim on them.
To increase the lift on our cams is hard because the lobe is so close to the tower. So if they just made the actual lobe taller, it would hit the tower. So they make the round end smaller (The opposite side of the lobe) and then make the lifter taller.
if you don't have taller lifters, then your cam is probably hitting the lifters mid-lobe.....

Well, me either really, but "horrid clattering noise" can mean different things to different people.
I've heard people hear a flat lifter tapping, and think their engine was coming apart... hence my reply to you.
Sill making the noise?

I am real curious about this. Hows it coming. Web-cam is usually really good and I like to think they would have told you what you needed, if anything, in addition to make it work. I would definitly call them for some answers.
I am hoping get one of their cams but would love to hear others experiance with them. I have the 2.5 in my 924S.
I have known deflated lifters to make a racket for a while after rebuild - not uncommon. Usually a little heat wakes them up.
Keep us posted.

I switched back to the factory cam to isolate the issue being in the valve train and now I can not get it to start. Great right... I turns over as normal and is trying but no start. occasional hit but then goes back to just trying. any ideas on this one. Just replaced the cap, plugs, wires, and checked to make sure it was in time.

OK the order is correct. damn I was hoping I just made a simple mistake. Its getting fuel (the fuel pressure gauge in the cluster is flexing when I turn it over so it has to be getting fuel) getting fire (pulled each wire and tested with extra plug) and its getting air... only thing I can think of is the timing right? I must have placed the belt off by a couple teeth or something... ahhhhhhh

Hopefully you didn't bend valves.... That would cause a "horrid noise". From what I've read, if you miss the timing belt by more than 1 or 2 teeth, then the valves go bye-bye....
Did you look at the valve springs when you took the tower off to change cams? I know you said you turned the engine by hand, but I can't figure out what else would cause a "horrid noise"

Yeah one or two teeth would cause bent valves..
I have a question that could pertain to the origional question, how do you set the cam and the gear in the right position? Maybe you could have set the gear at TDC when the cam was in the wrong position and that could have affected it? Just thinking out loud.
And also, if the lifters were mixed up, what kind of problems would this cause. I always new not to mix them up, but what do you do if you mixed them?
