Default 944 Motor & drivetrain swap

I'm not sure if you guys are purists here or if you all support swaps but...

I've acquired a recently totaled 2001 Audi S4 that has quite a bit of performance modifications and was wondering if I could shoehorn the 2.7t motor and the 6-speed from that into a 944*. I think it would be a unique swap and would have real potential, provided it would fit. Anyone try this or have any ideas?

That would be sick to have the Bi-turbo in a 944, but if your going through all the work of an engine swap i would pick a better base motor.

What do you mean by better? Easier/cheaper to repair? Only reason I'm considering the swap is because I have a perfect engine & tranny, I've got nothing but time but little money.

Yea especially if you have a small budget. A good guideline is to add up all the costs involved, and then multiply that amount by 2-3 times. If you really want to do a swap, i would consider selling the s4 stuff and putting in a chevy V8. It has been done many times, so the support is available.

I doubt the bi-turbo would even fit in the 944 engine bay, its a very large motor. Plus you couldnt use the tranny anyways.

1) Almost guaranteed it won't fit, LT1 with hugger exhaust manifolds has maybe 5-8mm of clearance on either side

2) 2001 2.7T motors were drive by wire, which means you'd need to retrofit the pedal assembly and the associated electronics

3) Hooking up just the rear driveshaft w/o front drive axles won't actually propel the car anyway.

4) Where are you gonna fit the two intercoolers?

5) No trans tunnel on the 944

I can spend the whole night writing valid reasons why it won't work.

I drive an A6 2.7T btw

The engines that fit to the 944's engine bay need to be small ; i.e. Porsche V8 won't fit but Chevy V8 will - Audi V6 won't fit either but Audi's inline 5-cyl will (there are some examples done).

For purist the only solution is a 968 engine

How about a Nissan VQ35? Anyone care to speculate on the potential fit?

i wish. its DOHC but only 60* v angle so maybe, however it might be tall.

It can't be that tall. It fits under the hood of 350Zs and the newer, lower Altimas.

maybe i phrased that wrong

it might be tall (though certainly not too tall as it fits into the newer lower altimas) but the 944 is just short lol

Default VQ35

I did alot of research on the possibility of the 3.5L all alloy V6 motor in the 944. It would need at least a 2" hood scoop even after dropping the Xmember by 1". I found a good deal on a low mile 5.3l V8 and decided to go that direction. I also recall looking up a Nissan Frontier Bellhousing to do the swap. That is a tall motor but very good engine.

Happily, the Audi V6 and V8 engines bolt up to the 924 bellhousing (924 Turbo is even better, as it uses a hydraulic clutch), which will allow you to leave the 944 driveline pretty much intact (you can junk/sell your Audi gearbox!).

Unhappily, the space issues remain.

I'm very interested in fitting an Audi turbo 5 into a 944. Both 10v and 20v engines respond to mods pretty much the same up to about 500bhp, but the 20v's crossflow head makes it an easier fit. A tweaked 4.2 Audi V8 would be a wonderfully refined motor for the 944, and surely the cheapest route (from a V8 quattro) to the 300bhp I'd be looking for, but the twin-cam head on a 90 degree V is surely too bulky.

The 2.7 V6 Audi Turbo engine would be an attractive alternative. Does anyone with a tape measure have any definitive answers on fitting the (60 degree) V6 into the 944 engine bay?

I had an A6 2.7T. Great engine but a LOT of ancillary plumbing that would not fit in the 944. Maybe you could have the intercoolers mounted outside the fenders!

Seriously, though, I would love to see someone plug in a VW/Audi 2.0T that's been worked up to 275 HP (still reliable but strong).

I can't say I've ever seen a 500hp 10V motor. 20V is WAY easier to make power from. 10V is easy to make power until you get to ~300hp then the head really has to be worked.
