Flush engine after head gasket failure?
After a head gasket failure (chocolate mousse in engine) I'm now in the middle of changing a lot of belts, rollers, gaskets etc. on my 951S engine.
How important is it to the flush/clean the engine before I put everything together?
Are these steps sufficient?
1. Remove old oil/water mix
2. Fill up with new cheap syntethic oil
3. Remove cheap oil
4. Change oil filter
5. Fill up with new quality oil
6. Fire her up and be a happy man.
7. Open a beer.
Or should I start the engine already after step 2 and let her idle for a while?
Or should I perhaps start with step 7??
What do you guys say?
Regards
Gustaf

I is how I do this, lots of miles after the flush to prove it worked.
-Buy a case of cheap regular oil
-Buy three to four oil filters
-Buy two can of motor flush
-Drain original oil, change filter
-Add oil and motor flush, let idle for 5-10 minutes
-Drain, change filter and oil.
-REPEAT UNTIL OIL SHOWS NO SIGN OF DISCOLORMENT.
-Add your regular oil and filter
-GOTO steps 6

Buy a carton of low-sudsing dishwasher detergent (NOT dish soap). Drain the existing coolant, fill with water and about 1 cup of dishwasher detergent. Run the car until temps are normal. Shut it down - drain after the engine cools for a bit, Repeat the flush once again. After twice, you should be set.
Do both the oil (as Brian suggests above) and the cooling system at the same time...

BTW, is it alright to use cheap, mineral oil for this purpose?
Or should I use at least semi-synthetic?
I don't want to risk my turbo or anything else, but just for "idling" purposes perhaps mineral oil is alright?
Thanks..

Don't forget to replace the radiator water/anti-freeze mix also. When you loose a head gasket, the exhaust gasses from the combustion process also get into the coolant. When these two mix, it creates a very strong acid!
