Angry Porsche must have the biggest idiot designing their motors...

Either that, or the guy is going "how can I make it next to impossible for the Average shadetree mechanic to accomplish such and such".

I'm so frickin' tired of working on this car. Every little thing is a job in itself. First I spend about 2 hours trying to take out the C-ring that holds the thermostat in place. I bought the seal that goes begind it, figuring I might as well change it since I'm there. The existing seal was pretty badly swollen, so I set out to remove it. I've spent 4 hours trying to remove that sonofabitch! 4 hours of my precious weekend. I really feel like giving up on this thing. Give me a honda or a chevy to work on any day. Hell - I'd even prefer a ford (I hate fords).

So anyway that SOB is still in there!!! It's been totally trashed in my attempts to remove it so there's no going back now. I've tried everything I can think of. Then I find out even though it looks rubber on the outside, it's metal inside!!! WHY???!!!

With all the crap a lot of you have put up with, it's a wonder any of your didn't dump your porsches a long time ago! And then we've got the A$$holes out there that pack engines in cardboard boxes and bubble wrap!! MORONS!!!!! Not to mention UPS - useless bunch of brown ba$tards.

Boy am I pissed. I'm pissed at my own experiences so far, and I'm pissed for what Eurospeed951, and Perry951 are going through.
Guys - if I win the lottery I'm buying you two a couple of nicely performance built motors, and a couple of fire extinguishers (knowing our luck). God knows I wouldn't drive mine without one.

T-stat C-ring..... mine only took me 3.5 hours.

Hang in there buddy! I know your pain. Novice "Joe Mechanic" here too. I spent 3 hours today doing an R&R of my A/C condensor. It took my an hour just to remove all of the nuts an bolts holding the black plastic protector underneath my valence. I sure as hell don't know what German wrenches look like but they must be made of rubber to get at the bolts and nuts from where ol' Dr. Porsche's engineers put them. All in all I did it... much frustration later. I just mark it up to a learning experience. Can't wait to get that darn a/c running. Hope yours works out well and the others too.

What the heck are you using to remove it, a plunger?? With the proper pair of snapring pliers jon got his out in under 3min. I don't understand where you are having so much trouble.

And for the record, I think Porsche knows what they are doing. If you want easy go buy a camaro.

Man, I FEEL your pain! I know EXACTLY how you feel! Owning one of these cars can be VERY frustrating, and there's nothing, no thought WHATSOEVER that can keep you going during those times! I'm like that about every two weeks, for several days straight! I amaze myself, sometimes, that I haven't driven the thing off a cliff yet- as I've said many times before, it's probably b/c I can't get the PO to get in it w/me to go for a ride Hang in there man...

Hang in there Jax, I almost dumped my 951 within the 1st two months of owning the #$%*!&@ damn thing! Now years later, I'm rebuilding the engine from every single nut and bolt on up, so these things have a way of growing on you !

Anyway, before I start any kind of a job, I do a search on the archives here. It really helps to see what troubles others have had so I can avoid the trial & error myself.

BTW, it's helpful to have well-trained monkeys or little kids around with small hands...

as some of you know I recently took the high road...



Having a warranty is good piece of mind and saves time!

With all the time and money I was spending on my 951s, I finally decided to give it a rest and go for something new and reliable that would not take up all my weekend time that could be better spent picking up women!

With that said the 951s are great performance cars and my 951s were very quick and handled great. You really have to determine what your time's worth and take it from there. Good luck!

I have been where you are. Most snap ring pliers just aren't big enough. You just need some better tools. Well, this may not make it "easy" but it will certianly make it easier.

Here's a different take on Porsche engineering. When I was in High School (early seventies - yes I'm an old fart), we felt that one horsepower per cubic inch was a magic number - still is in most cases. A 350HP Chevy 350 was a very powerful car - lousy gas mileage, but awesome quick.

Now, fast forward to 1986 and Porsche takes a 150 cubic inch engine and cranks out 217HP on a stock 951 that delivers 28mpg. Makes you kinda wonder?

Now the rice crowd has upped the anti to 100hp/1L on NA engines! But I know of some chevy tuners who can get small blocks to the low 90's/1L.

That would be the same as 250HP on a 944 NA! But you'd probably have to paint the car yellow!

Integra Type-R's (which have 100hp/1L) have been imported to the US in Black, White, and Yellow.

The Answer:::

Big snap ring pliers that have had the tips filed down to fit in the tiny a$$ holes on that snap ring and have been heated and bent to about a 60 degree angle. Its been in my experience that you never use the same set of snap ring pliers more than a couple of times, because some smart guy decides to make it have to spread out further, or smaller holes or...

Oh, and a gov't financed garage with an endless supply of money, tools, and free advice from shop mechanics.

Sorry if I didn't make it clearer - I was tired. I got the C-ring (is that what it's called) and thermostat out after about 2 hours using various contraptions, including tools that were supposedly designed for the job. I ended up getting it off by using a very tapered punch. I snapped the end off the punch, twisted the hell out of the c-ring, but I managed to twist it all back into shape with my vice and a pair of pliers. I love my vice!

Behind the thermostat is a rubber seal with metal innards. THIS is what took me over the edge. It is still in there, but is now trashed so badly that it HAS to be removed before I put the new t'stat in.

I just checked the garage - the 951 didn't catch on fire last night, so unfortunately I guess I'll have to work on it some more today.
