Post Torque tube or trans. ?

I finally figured out where a rattle is.Coming from the rear of the car and stops when I push the clutch in. Turned out to be coming from the front of the trans/rear of the tube. I pulled the access plugs and looked at the tube, all appears ok, have not checked the trans. oil yet.

It has been doing this for a couple of months but until I pulled up next to a wall at the ATM and had the pass. window down I didn't realize how bad it sounded.

What and how serious could this be?

Also when I drive next to a wall I don't hear the noise, but it could also be covered by engine or tire noise.

Any help appreciated.

Ahhh, the all mysterious rattle noise. I have had my tranny replaced, torque tube replaced, clutch replaced, pressure plate replaced, throw out bearing replaced, needle bearing replaced and yet the rattle is still there. Amazing. I to this day do not know what the hell that is. My car runs fine but that noise is annoying. Clutch in no noise, clutch out rattle rattle. When I got the new tube put in it went away for about 3 months but it has slowly come back. I don't know if something gets loose but man it is the main and I mean, THE MAIN FREAKIN PROBLEM WITH THESE CARS. I wish someone would find what the hell this rattle is!!!

It's too "solid" of a rattle for the heat shield. {Also already tacked back on)

I had thought that this was the muffler going bad, the innards rattling around. IOT is worse when the car has been driven, ie; tranny warm to slightly hot maybe 7 miles town driving.

I had been planning a 1200 mile trip and guess I can still pull it off since I'm not walking yet.

FX, I'm going to have my mech. listen to it,{He's a PCA scrutineer} but it may be a week or so. I'll let you know what else to look at.

FX - aren't you talking about the inherent noise of 5th gear (or is it rev?) rattling around in the transaxle?

I thought the noise was inherent in the design of the transaxle...

9.1 When I release my clutch in neutral, I hear noises, is this bad?

Not usually. The transmission has several shafts that the gears move back and forth on. On the end of one of these shafts is the 5th gear idler. This gear rattles back and forth because it has a larger tolerance than the others. Porsche apparently stopped all warranty repairs for this noise because there is no real repair - the larger tolerance is normal. The noise is particularly evident because it vibrates the input shaft which is connected to the torque tube that runs up the middle of your car. This creates a megaphone type effect that amplifies the noise.

If you're unsure if your particularly "noise" is normal or not, taking it to a mechanic who has looked at a few 944's should clear the situation up for you. Some owners have expressed that using Swepco transmission oil quiets down the rattle somewhat.

-From the 944 FAQ, read it now, here...

Yeah, Keith. I believe that is the response I got from everybody. It definately is worse once the car has been driven a few miles and everything is nice and hot. Very strange how if my friend gets his mustang tranny rebuilt they change all the bearings as well. I spend three times as much and the fu*king morons do not change the bearings. they say that is normal procedure because the bearings never go bad. yeah assh*le but the freakin noise sucks!!!! We should demand that these trannys have the bearings replaced as well when rebuilt. Pisses me off.

Talked to my mech. and he just said yeah they all do that.According to him it's the torque tube ratting, the leverage from it's length and any extra play added to a less than Hondalike idle and not to waste any money trying to fix it cuz it will be back.

I'm glad I didn't do all that FX did to no avail.

The 944 (968 converted) is quiet as hell. While the 968 CS rattles at clutch out when idling. Something must be "wrong" with the CS.

We have just started reaserching the problem.
